Horror as Norway freight trains mow down over 100 reindeer Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:53 AM PST More than 100 reindeer have been mowed down by freight trains in northern Norway in recent days in what has been called a "bloodbath" during their winter migration, said the nation's public broadcaster. "I'm so angry that I'm dizzy," owner of the 65 dead reindeer, Ole Henrik Kappfjell, told NRK. "The worst thing was the animals that were not killed in the accident, they were lying there, suffering, it was a bloodbath over several kilometres," he added. |
Bobcat rescued after being stuck in a car's grill for miles on Thanksgiving Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:18 AM PST A bobcat just received the best Thanksgiving miracle: a second chance at life. Richmond Animal Care and Control in Virginia rushed to the aid of the wild, big kitty after it was struck with a car on Thanksgiving Day by a citizen on her way to work. According to their Facebook post, the woman parked her car only to find the bobcat unable to move inside the grill. SEE ALSO: Rescue dog uses his smile to help find a forever home Rescuers rushed to the scene where they sedated and freed the bobcat, according to the Facebook post. He was then transferred to another animal care center, the Wildlife Center of Virginia for further treatment. Luckily for the cat, he only endured one minor scrape on his back. I bet this little guy is quite thankful. WATCH: If you love animals watch this video |

The discovery comes just days after a group of eight fishermen, who said they were from North Korea, washed up on the same shore. McCain to Hillary Clinton: 'You've got to move on' Posted: 27 Nov 2017 10:54 AM PST Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., says he understands why Hillary Clinton decided to write her campaign memoir, "What Happened," which was published in September — 10 months after her brutal election loss to Donald Trump. But McCain, who suffered his own bitter defeat, to Barack Obama, as the Republican nominee in 2008, also knows that "you can't rewrite history." |

China’s J-31 Stealth Fighter Has a New Mission: Selling Cars Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:54 AM PST Images of China's J-31 stealth fighter are in high demand given the nature of the technology and rumors about its future. It was odd, then, that the prototype fifth-generation fighter jet recently appeared in photos posing next to an SUV. Turns out, the bizarre photographs are not an advertisement for the J-31 but for an SUV called the X5 by Hanteng Autos, a relative newcomer to the Chinese auto industry that is now, apparently, trying to ride on the J-31's wing flaps. |

The new national assembly, where 50 percent of the deputies must be ward delegates elected on Sunday, is expected on Feb. 24 to select a new president to replace Raul Castro, Fidel's 86-year-old younger brother, who has said he will step down after serving two five-year terms. |

'Chennai Six' former British soldiers released after four years in Indian jail Posted: 27 Nov 2017 06:27 AM PST Six former British soldiers working as part of a private security team protecting ships from piracy have been released from prison in India after serving four years for possessing weapons. The "Chennai Six", who had all previously served in either the Parachute or Yorkshire Regiments, were acquitted on Monday and told by a judge to apply to get their passports returned, ending a long wait for them and their families in the UK. Billy Irving, 37, Nick Dunn, 31, John Armstrong, 30, Nicholas Simpson, 47, Ray Tindall, 42, and Paul Towers, 54, were among 35 imprisoned in October 2013 while working as security on commercial ships to protect against pirates in the Indian Ocean. They were jailed in 2013 along with 14 Estonian, 12 Indian and three Ukrainian colleagues when their vessel, the MV Seaman Guard Ohio, was boarded by the Indian Navy for entering its waters without permission. All the men worked for AdvanFort, a maritime security company. Indian authorities found weapons and ammunition on board and the men were charged with possession of illegal firearms. Following an initial conviction the charges were quashed when the men argued they had the right permits and clearance for them as they were an anti-piracy unit. Yvonne McHugh, centre, the girlfriend of Billy Irving who is being held in a prison in Chennai in India, is joined by family members of other prisoners of the so-called Chennai Six ahead of the verdict in their appeal Credit: Stefan Rousseau/PA But they they were later reconvicted when a lower court reinstated the charges, as the Indian justice system, both in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and nationally, moved their case between courts and judges. Monday's decision by the Madurai bench of the High Court in Chennai said the 35 crew members could now apply to get back their passports. Money spent on fines would also be reimbursed, the court ruled. David McMullen, Coordinator for the 'Chennai6' Campaign, said: "Absolutely fantastic news. It was a bit of a blur for a second when I first heard. Having campaigned for so long and seen what the families have gone through it's amazing we've finally got them free." On hearing the news at their family home in Britain, Yvonne McHugh, partner of Billy Irving said she was over the moon. "They've all been acquitted, all 35 of them," she said. "We are just waiting to hear how soon they'll be home. That's the biggest hurdle we faced and all of them have been acquitted." Lisa Dunn, the sister of Nick Dunn, said: "The longer it went on, as much as you still have an element of hope, it does dwindle after having so many delays and setbacks. It will make all of our Christmases. All of our dreams have come true today." Downing Street welcomed the decision. Theresa May's official spokesman said: "The Government, from the Prime Minister down, has worked hard for over four years to support the men and their families and we share their happiness at the court's decision to give a full acquittal to each of the men. "We are now working with the Indian authorities to discuss the next steps. We will continue to offer the men and their families consular assistance for as long as it is needed." |

The Navy Is Obsessed with Big Aircraft Carriers (But There Could Be Another Option) Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:08 AM PST The costs of the new Ford-class carriers have even seapower advocates as Sen. John McCain searching for alternatives: in January 2017, the Arizona senator released a white paper, "Restoring American Power," that called for a "high/low mix" of aircraft carriers, possibly involving a variant of the America-class amphibious transport equipped with the short-takeoff and vertical-landing version of the Joint Strike Fighter. As long as the United States buys aircraft carriers, the high/low mix debate will continue. The United States Navy's ten nuclear supercarriers are the largest warships on the high seas. |

Lebanon's Aoun holds talks on Hariri government Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:28 AM PST President Michel Aoun held talks on Monday with other Lebanese political leaders over the future of Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's government, but gave no sign whether they discussed Hariri's demand the country steer clear of regional turmoil. Aoun's office said the talks were positive and constructive but did not detail steps to address the demands Hariri made after postponing his shock resignation, notably that Lebanese stick by the state policy of staying out of regional conflicts - a reference to Iran-backed Shi'ite group Hezbollah. |
Employee used crisp packet as 'Faraday cage' to hide his whereabouts during work Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:45 AM PST A man in Australia was sacked after he relied on a 180-year-old scientific discovery to help prevent his colleagues discovering his whereabouts while he played golf during work hours. Tom Colella, a 60-year-old electrician in Perth, lost his job after an anonymous letter to his firm claimed that he left work to play golf at least 140 times over the last two years. Australia's Fair Work Commission, a workplace tribunal, heard that Mr Colella blocked his whereabouts by storing his personal digital assistant, a phone-like device that has a GPS inside inside, in an empty foil packet of Twisties, a puffy cheese-based snack that is popular in Australia. The tribunal found that the packet was deliberately used to operate as an elaborate "Faraday cage" - an enclosure which can block electromagnetic fields - and prevented his employer knowing his location. The cage set-up was named after Scottish scientist Michael Faraday, who in 1836 observed that a continuous covering of conductive material could be used to block electromagnetic fields. "I can find no plausible explanation why Mr Colella would create a Faraday cage around his PDA, except to obstruct the GPS collecting capacity of the device," said Bernie Riordan, a commissioner at the tribunal. The Faraday Cage effect: How to block a mobile phone signal "Mr Colella appears to have been deliberately mischievous in acting in this manner." The tribunal ruled that Mr Colella was fairly sacked and that he had been "deliberate in trying to hide his whereabouts and deceive his employer". It also relied on less scientific evidence, including records from the golf club and records from an electronic gate which showed that he had not entered a worksite as required. Commenting on Mr Colella's use of a crisps packet, Phil Dooley, a science writer at the Australian National University, said that any object could work to create a Faraday cage as long as it was metallic. "The main point is just that it is foil," Mr Dooley told ABC News. "A birdcage, anything else metallic would have worked… An aeroplane, which is metal, acts as a Faraday cage. When you are travelling in a plane, you could get struck by lightning and it wouldn't hurt [because] the electricity stays on the outside of the metal and the people in the cabin don't feel it at all." Mr Colella is now reportedly working as an Uber driver. |

Ex-Russian minister says he thought bag with $2 million cash was gift of alcohol Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:26 AM PST Former Russian economy minister Alexei Ulyukayev, accused of extorting a bribe, told a court on Monday he thought a bag holding $2 million in cash which he took from Rosneft chief executive Igor Sechin held a gift of expensive alcohol. Ulyukayev faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty of accepting the $2 million cash from Sechin, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin. Prosecutors said the bribe was given last year on Nov. 14 in exchange for Ulyukayev approving the sale of a state-controlled oil company Bashneft to Rosneft. |

Court blocks Uber ride-sharing in Israel Posted: 27 Nov 2017 06:24 AM PST A court blocked Uber's ride-sharing services in Israel on Monday in a victory for the country's traditional taxi operators, saying the US firm's private drivers lacked proper insurance. The Tel Aviv district court judge's injunction ordering the services to stop from Wednesday came after a court challenge from a taxi drivers' union and a separate ride-hailing app. "They operate private taxis in violation of the law," said Yehuda Bar On, head of the taxi drivers' union. |
