Aspiring US model found murdered on rural road in JamaicaThe family of an aspiring US model found dead with her throat cut on a rural Jamaican road say they are "broken beyond repair". Désirée Gibbon's body was found in the town of Anchovy, located around five miles from the popular tourist destination of Montego Bay on Jamaica's north coast, on Sunday morning.   The 26-year-old, from Queens in New York, had flown to the Caribbean island in October on a three-month working visa to save up enough money to attend film school in Europe. Ms Gibbon, who last spoke to her family on Thanksgiving and was due to fly back home this week, had been staying at her grandmother's hotel on the island while looking for work as a bartender.   Her Jamaican father, Cali Gibbon, told the New York Daily News he couldn't understand the brutal nature of his daughter's murder. "The brutality is what killed me," he said. "She was beaten and had her throat sliced open." A GoFundMe page has been created for the 26-year-old  Credit: GoFundMe Her mother, Andrea Cali-Gibbon, said there "are just no words for this tragic event". "We are destroyed and broken beyond repair. Please keep praying for us as it won't be easy for a long time," she wrote in a message to her daughter's friends on a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for her funeral. "Her dad and I are going to Jamaica on Friday (1 December) to try and get answers and bring her home. "Just know we are also thinking about you all and the grief you are going through. I'm sad and heartbroken." She had moved to Jamaica to find work  Credit: GoFundMe She described her daughter, who competed in beauty pageants and worked as a model from an early age, as a "kindred spirit who would hurt no one" and "the most forgiving person I ever met". "She loved life and wanted everyone to be happy and successful," she wrote.   Ms Cali-Gibbon added she was "astounded" by the generosity of the hundreds who had helped raise more $20,000 (£14,000) on the crowdfunding page. Her aunt, Peggy Brunner, told The Telegraph: "I set up the fund because we need help getting her body home to give her a proper burial." More than $20,000 has been raised for Ms Gibbon  Credit: GoFundMe  Local media reports she was one of 12 people killed in four days in the suburban parish of St James. Pix 11 reports no arrests have been made and the coroner's office will conduct anautopsy over the coming days. Désirée Gibbon's GoFundMe page.

Russian PM says U.S.-Russia ties at low ebb but Trump 'friendly'By Polina Nikolskaya MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday that U.S.-Russia ties were the worst he could recall, but that U.S. President Donald Trump struck him as a friendly person keen to establish positive working contacts with Russia. Trump took office in January, saying he wanted warmer ties with Russia which had fallen to a post-Cold War low. Medvedev, who met Trump in Manila this month, suggested he and President Vladimir Putin both found Trump constructive and friendly in person, but accused other U.S. politicians of playing what he called "the Russian card" to achieve their own aims and influence Trump's attitude towards Russia.

Porsche stolen 27 years ago discovered in Oregon wilderness  A cold case investigation into the mystery disappearance of a Porsche 27 years ago has finally been solved. The 1979 Porsche 924 coupe went missing from a car park outside a cinema in the city of Medford, Oregon, in 1991. Police say the classic car had not been seen for more than two decades when a dog walker stumbled across the overturned wreckage in remote woodland on 28 November. Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office investigated initial reports that human remains were found with the wreckage, however bones on the ground nearby were determined to belong to a deer. "A man walking in a wooded area this week came across a vehicle reported stolen nearly 27 years ago," the sheriff's office said. The position of the vehicle at the base of a cliff made it nearly impossible to see from the road above. "Heavy forest debris indicated the vehicle had been there for a significant period of time. The registration tags expired in 1991. Further investigation found the Porsche was reported stolen on January 20, 1991." The sheriff's office say it is working to determine the best course of action to remove the vehicle. "Its location on steep, rugged terrain presents logistical and environmental concerns for removal," they said. Mercedes car stolen without using a key in seconds

Restaurant's Yelp page gets caught in the crosshairs of a Nazi sympathizer controversy

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 02:29 PM PST

Restaurant's Yelp page gets caught in the crosshairs of a Nazi sympathizer controversyThe 571 Grill & Draft House in New Carlisle, Ohio, has a pretty inconspicuous online presence. It's been featured for its burgers on a local blog and its Yelp page had just a few reviews after four years on the restaurant review site. But that's all changed since a New York Times article came out over the weekend about a white nationalist, Tony Hovater, worked there. The Washington Post followed up Wednesday that Hovater was fired from his job at 571 Grill. His wife and brother-in-law were also fired from the restaurant. SEE ALSO: New York Times responds to backlash after profiling Nazi sympathizer After Saturday's article and the backlash to what many considered a normalization of neo-Nazis, 571 Grill got caught up in the clash between supporters claiming Hovater can believe what he wants to believe and those praising the establishment for letting him go. A look at the restaurant's Yelp page shows how the place became something of a battleground. A four-star review from Greg. B in Long Island City, NY, came in Thursday praising the burger joint for its position on Hovater — not for its food or service. "Great job firing Nazis who worked there.  If I someday pass thru will check your place out," he wrote. Jennifer P. from nearby Dayton, OH, doled out five stars and said, "Nice rotating selection of beer and the pizza and burgers are good. But what I love most about this place is that the owner recently fired an admitted Nazi sympathizer after reading an article about him in the NYT. Lots of negative reviews have coincidentally been posted here and elsewhere; don't believe it. Propaganda from a group of hateful dirtbags. It's 2017 and we're actually debating on whether Nazis are decent people," she wrote. Others expressed disgust at the restaurant's decision to fire Hovater for his beliefs.  Dozens of one-star reviews came in Wednesday and Thursday. More than 40 of those reviews were flagged on Yelp as "not currently recommended," meaning they aren't counted towards the business' overall rating. A few addressed the NYT article backlash while others were dressed up as real posts about bad quality food and service. The online hate hasn't destroyed 571 Grill's online reputation entirely — it still holds four stars despite the barrage of troll reviews. When we reached out to the restaurant about the Yelp hate, they referred us to a statement they gave Wednesday in TippNews Daily, a local online news outlet. The owner made clear the business doesn't share any of Hovater's views and doesn't tolerate hate. The statement said the article about Hovater illustrated "some very disturbing images and thoughts from this individual." The owner noted the recent attacks on the venue stemmed from the article and subject matter. "Since the release of this article, we have been swamped with phone calls and social media messages that are threatening and intimidating to both us and our employees. These hateful and disturbing messages are truly saddening to those of us who just want to serve delicious food and cold beers," the restaurant said. Hovater apparently suggested he be fired, the statement added. "We felt it necessary to fully sever the relationship with them in hopes to protect our 20 other employees from the verbal and social media threats being made from individuals all over the country, and as far as Australia." WATCH: This bizarre YouTuber has the entire internet wondering where she came from

Donald Trump's situation just became much, much worse now Michael Flynn is cooperating with Mueller's Russia probeThis is what Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller appears to be doing in regard to the Trump-Russia investigation. Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI over a meeting he had with Russia's then Washington Ambassador Sergey Kislyak on 29 December 2016, the same day Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russia and expelled 35 diplomats in response for Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 election. The indictment says Flynn lied about asking Russia to refrain from escalating its response and lied too about Kislyak later telling him that Russia had chosen to moderate its response.

'History in the making': World's biggest battery launched in Australia as Elon Musk beats 100-day deadline

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:37 PM PST

'History in the making': World's biggest battery launched in Australia as Elon Musk beats 100-day deadlineThe world's biggest battery was officially launched in Australia on Friday, a day after the Elon Musk-driven project was powered up early to meet demand amid a bout of hot weather, officials said. Musk's Tesla built the Powerpack system, which can provide electricity for more than 30,000 homes, to ease South Australia's energy woes after the state was hit with a total blackout in 2016 following an "unprecedented" storm. The maverick billionaire earlier this year offered on Twitter to build the battery farm, and completed it last week to narrowly beat his self-imposed deadline of having it ready in 100 days. "South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy, delivered to homes and businesses 24/7," state Premier Jay Weatherill said Friday at the launch to coincide with the first day of summer. "This is history in the making." The 100 MW/129 MWh battery, located in the rural town of Jamestown north of Adelaide and connected to a wind farm operated by French energy firm Neoen, was switched on a day early, just as temperatures soar in the state. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) said it delivered 70MW of stored wind energy into the state's market to meet peak demand on Thursday. The world's biggest battery was officially launched in Australia on Friday Credit: AFP The battery farm is expected to help tackle power shortages, reduce intermittencies and address demands in summer, when most of the country experiences its highest energy usage. Tesla said it was hopeful the project would provide a model for future deployments around the world, adding in a statement Friday that its fast completion "shows that a sustainable, effective energy solution is possible". Neoen deputy chief executive Romain Desrousseaux said the "ambitious" project – which Musk estimated cost at least US$50 million – would bring the state to the forefront of global energy storage technology. Last summer, extreme hot weather as well as storms saw blackouts hit some regions of Australia. The AEMO is switching on closed gas-fired power stations to provide extra power to Australia's east coast this season. Although Australia is one of the world's largest producers of coal and gas, the South Australian blackout raised questions about its energy security. Several ageing coal-fired power plants have been closed, while strong demand for gas exports and a rise in onshore gas drilling bans have fuelled concerns of a looming domestic energy shortage in the next few years. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull earlier this year said a hydro-electric project in New South Wales state, the Snowy Mountains Scheme, would be expanded to provide electricity to 500,000 homes. More than 60 percent of electricity generation in Australia is from coal, with 14 percent from renewables, according to government data published last year. History of Tesla

Lobster with Pepsi logo 'tattoo' on its claw caught in Canada

Lobster with Pepsi logo 'tattoo' on its claw caught in Canada  A lobster caught in Canada with a Pepsi logo imprinted on its claw is drawing attention to the harmful impact rubbish can have on the ocean, conservationists say. The branded crustacean was trapped by a fishing crew off the Canadian island of Grand Manan, New Brunswick, on 21 November. Karissa Landstrand told CBC she was banding and loading lobsters into a crate for transportation to a buyer when she spotted the instantly recognisable red and blue logo of the fizzy drink.   "I can't say how he got it on," Ms Lindstrand, who posted the image on Facebook, said. "It seemed more like a tattoo or a drawing on the lobster rather than something growing into it." She told Canadian media it appeared as if the logo was "tattooed on the lobster's claw", causing a debate among the crew working on the boat, however she could not explain how it got there. "They believe that maybe there was a can in the bottom of the ocean and when [the lobster] was growing, it grew around the can," said Ms Lindstrand, who has been lobster fishing for four years. Another speculated that cardboard Pepsi packaging may have been stuck on its claw for years, with Ms Landstrand adding it could be scraped off but was not paper. "This tells me that there is a lot of garbage in the ocean, if that's what's happening to the lobsters we get out from the water," she added. In numbers | Plastic in the sea Matthew Abbott, a marine program coordinator at the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, said it showed "garbage [is] infiltrating even into the deep water". "I was surprised by unique turn of events that led to this lobster being imprinted with an image of a Pepsi can, but sadly not surprised that marine animals, even found at some depth, are coming into contact with human waste," he told The Telegraph. "It certainly helps illustrate how widespread marine debris is. While we often think of marine debris as being on the surface it is indeed spread throughout the water column both as large pieces and micro-plastics. "This may have been a fairly harmless case, but often when marine animals come into contact with human rubbish the outcome is much worse. Whales, seals, dolphin, porpoise, sharks, fish, turtles can all be harmed and even killed by rope, net, and other debris in the water and in the water; animals from the smallest plankton to the largest whales can be hurt or killed when they ingest plastic rubbish. "Ocean rubbish a big problem in New Brunswick, and sadly it is globally. Every time I walk local beaches or head out on the water on our Fundy Baykeeper patrol boat I find garbage both from local industries as well as trash from individuals." The non-profit organisation said it "tells the story of a dishearteningly common and pervasive problem in our oceans: the abundance of human-made garbage". A recent Blue Planet II episode focused on how plastic is having a devastating effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures, leaving many viewers shocked. Sea creatures in the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth, were also found to have plastic in their stomachs, scientists recently discovered.

Pterosaurs were reptiles, and the first creatures -- after insects -- to evolve powered flight, meaning they flapped their wings to stay aloft instead of simply jumping and gliding. Until now, scientists had found some pterosaur eggs with remains inside, including three in Argentina and five in China.

We Now Know America's Plan to Beat Russia or China's Air DefensesAs radars and radar-guided antiaircraft missiles continue to grow in range and sophistication, jamming and other forms of electronic warfare will remain vital means for air power to survive over the battle spaces of the future. The Next Generation Jammer is the Pentagon's attempt to counter new advances in air-defense radars—while adding to its bag of electronic tricks. While the U.S. military is unlikely to intentionally attack Russian forces in Syria, the situation highlights the importance of suppressing enemy air defenses—one major tactic U.S. flyers have long relied upon is radar jamming, or saturating enemy radars with "noise" and false signals so that they can't track and fire upon friendly airplanes.
