China says Earth-bound space lab to offer 'splendid' show Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:02 AM PDT A defunct space laboratory that will plunge back to Earth in the coming days is unlikely to cause any damage, Chinese authorities say, but will offer instead a "splendid" show akin to a meteor shower. China's space agency said Thursday that the roughly eight-tonne Tiangong-1 will re-enter the atmosphere some time between Saturday and Monday. The European Space Agency on Friday gave smaller window between Saturday night and late Sunday evening GMT. |

Trump supporter Malloch says he will testify to Mueller grand jury Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:50 PM PDT By Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An American academic who supports U.S. President Donald Trump and is a strong advocate of Britain's exit from the European Union will testify next month before the federal grand jury considering evidence in the investigation into possible collusion between Trump's 2016 election campaign and Russia. Theodore Malloch, the author of a forthcoming pro-Trump book and an ally of Nigel Farage, a former leader of Britain's UK Independence Party, said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Friday by the book's publisher that he was questioned by FBI agents when he landed at Boston's Logan International Airport on Tuesday after a flight from London and served with a subpoena to appear before the grand jury. |

'Back with eyes open': Malala visits Pakistan district where she was shot Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:07 PM PDT Malala Yousafzai visited the Swat valley Saturday for her first trip back to the once militant-infested Pakistani region where she was shot in the head by the Taliban more than five years ago. Peace has returned to Swat because of the invaluable sacrifices rendered by my brothers and sisters," she said at a school outside Mingora, the district's main town, where she was escorted by the Pakistani military. The brief trip by the 20-year-old Nobel laureate is a highly symbolic moment for Pakistan, which regularly touts Swat as a success story in its long battle with extremism as it defends itself against accusations by the US and others that its northwest remains a safe haven for militancy. |

British soldier killed by IED in Syria in first UK troop death in fight against Isil Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:02 AM PDT A British special forces soldier has been killed by an improvised explosive device in Syria, in the first death of a serving UK troop in the fight against the Islamic State. An American was also killed by the roadside bomb in the northern Syrian city of Manbij on Thursday, which also wounded four members of the local council. The unnamed British soldier was embedded with US special forces overseeing a clean-up operation in Manbij, which was controlled by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) until it was taken by allied Kurdish and Arab forces in the summer of 2016. The city, close to the border with Turkey, earned the nickname "Little London" because of the large numbers of British Isil fighters stationed in the city during the days of the "caliphate". A Ministry Of Defence spokesperson said: "It is with regret that we must confirm that a member of the UK Armed Forces was killed by an improvised explosive device in Syria yesterday. "The individual was embedded with US forces on a counter-Daesh operation when the incident occurred. "The family has been notified and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. The 'Beatles' of terror Since 2014 the coalition has provided weapons, training and other support to Kurdish and Arab forces fighting Isil jihadists in Syria and Iraq. While Isil has largely been cleared from northern Syria, sleeper cells are known to operate and have carried out a number of insurgent attacks in recent months. Special forces units are known to be on the ground in Syria, securing areas retaken from Isil, but officials have refused to comment on their activities. Manbij is currently under threat of attack from Turkey, which stormed the nearby northern Syrian town of Afrin after an offensive against the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG) militia. Ankara has repeatedly threatened to push its operations farther east to Manbij, which could lead to a direct confrontation between the two Nato allies. The attack in Manbij happened late Thursday - the day US President Donald Trump said he would pull out forces "very soon". It came after Donald Trump caught his officials off guard by saying that America would be "out" of Syria "very soon" during a speech on infrastructure. Operation Shader | Britain's war against Islamic State The US president dropped the hint while speaking in Ohio on Thursday night in an address intended to drum up support for more infrastructure spending. He said: "We're knocking the hell out of Isis. We'll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon. Let the other people take care of it now." Mr Trump added: "We got to get back to our country where we belong, where we want to be." The comments contrast with James Mattis, the US defence secretary, and Rex Tillerson, the former secretary of state, who have said the US needs to remain engaged. It reflects Mr Trump's shifting stance on foreign intervention. He called for US troops to pull out of Afghanistan during the election campaign but has since deployed thousands more soldiers. This latest incident brings the number of US personnel killed in action during the operation against Isil to 14. Addressing the House of Commons on Thursday, Penny Mordaunt, International Development Secretary, confirmed that the UK will remain member of international coalition to "prevent Daesh remerging elsewhere." "Our work is not yet done, Daesh still holds pockets of territory in Syria," she added. "With its loss of territory, it will still pose a threat as an insurgency, they will continue to try to direct and inspire terror attacks around the world." |
America Must Drop Its Delusions about Dealing with Russia Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:27 AM PDT For too long, the U.S. national-security community has oscillated in its assessment of the Russian Federation, swinging between viewing Moscow as the country's number one geopolitical threat to dismissing the challenge of a nation whose per capita GDP equals that of Portugal. This has led to the worst of all satisficing comprises: an approach that views Russia as a competitor and adversary, but which does not require a great deal of investment, because the unstoppable Russian threat of today will evaporate when Russia inevitably collapses under the weight of its economic, political and demographic contradictions. |

Syria rebel group upbeat on Douma talks but denies deal Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:29 AM PDT BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Syrian rebel group said on Friday that U.N.-mediated talks with Russia were "heading in the right direction" but denied it had agreed to evacuate the last insurgent-held enclave in eastern Ghouta. The town of Douma, controlled by the Jaish al-Islam rebel group, is the last patch of eastern Ghouta still held by insurgents who have been routed in a ferocious offensive by the Russian-backed Syrian military that began in February. Its recovery would seal a major victory for President Bashar al-Assad, crushing the last big rebel stronghold near Damascus seven years into a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. |

Body camera and surveillance helicopter footage released last week showed police chasing and then firing 20 rounds at 22-year-old Stephon Clark, fearing that he was carrying a weapon. |

Donald Trump 'tells Vladimir Putin: "If there is an arms race, 'I’ll win"' Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:42 AM PDT Donald Trump is said to have told Vladimir Putin that if the US and Russia had an arms race, the US would win. Mr Trump reportedly made the comments during a congratulatory call with Mr Putin last week after the Russian leader was unsurprisingly reelected as president. Mr Putin's claim that new nuclear-capable weapons could reach the US "really got under the president's skin", an official told NBC News. |
