China condemns Mike Pompeo's 'arrogance' on 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square crackdown

Posted: 04 Jun 2019 02:27 AM PDT

China condemns Mike Pompeo's 'arrogance' on 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square crackdownChina on Tuesday slammed Mike Pompeo for "lunatic ravings and babbling nonsense" after the US secretary of state criticised Beijing's human rights record in a statement issued on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Pompeo's statement "maliciously attacks China's political system, denigrates the state of China's human rights and religious affairs, wantonly criticises China's Xinjiang policy and severely interferes in China's domestic affairs", foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in a regular press briefing. "These lunatic ravings and babbling nonsense will only end up in the trash can of history." Mr Pompeo made his comments the day before the anniversary of the June 4, 1989 bloodshed. In a sign of further strain between China and the US,  Beijing on Tuesday issued a travel warning for America, saying Chinese visitors have been interrogated, interviewed and subjected to other forms of what it called harassment by US law enforcement agencies. The iconic 'Tank Man'  image of Tiananmen Square taken in 1989 Credit: Reuters The warning urges Chinese citizens and Chinese-funded bodies in the US to step up their safety awareness and preventative measures and respond "appropriately and actively". The warning comes amid an increasingly bitter trade dispute between the sides and tougher immigration enforcement by the Trump administration. Also on Tuesday, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued its own travel alert for the US, noting the high frequency of shootings, robberies and theft in the country. Chinese students abroad were also urged Monday to assess the risks involved given tightened visa restrictions. Beijing has gone to exhaustive lengths to prevent commemorations of the crackdown in which hundreds of unarmed civilians, and possibly more than 1,000, were killed when China sent tanks and troops into Tiananmen Square to crush a student-led movement. Mr Pompeo's intervention on Monday night triggered a response from Beijing's embassy in Washington. A spokesperson at the embassy said in a statement that whoever attempts "to patronise and bully the Chinese people... will only end up in the ash heap of history." The spokesperson said Mr Pompeo had used "the pretext of human rights" for a statement that "grossly intervenes in China's internal affairs, attacks its system, and smears its domestic and foreign policies. "This is an affront to the Chinese people and a serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations. The Chinese side expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to it." Tiananmen Square massacre The Chinese statement referred only to "the political incident of the late 1980s," and said China's government and people long ago "reached the verdict" on it. "China's human rights are in the best period ever," the embassy said. "China is firmly committed to the path of peaceful development and to the development of human rights in China and the whole world, and has made significant contribution to the international human rights governance. This is a fact that is recognized by all unbiased people."

"These critical minerals are often overlooked but modern life without them would be impossible," Ross said in a statement.

The NSA is urging Windows users to update their computers ASAP

The NSA is urging Windows users to update their computers ASAPIf you're a Windows user who has yet to update your operating system after the discovery of the Bluekeep vulnerability a few weeks ago, then maybe a warning from the NSA will be enough to spur you on.Bluekeep is a vulnerability that's been compared to the devastating 2007 malware WannaCry that wreaked havoc on computer systems around the world, resulting in millions of dollars' worth of damage. There's concern that systems running older versions of Windows like Windows 7 are especially vulnerable to Bluekeep. The NSA's advisory, which you can read in full here, notes that Bluekeep is a vulnerability in the remote desktop feature on legacy versions of Windows. "The National Security Agency is urging Microsoft Windows administrators and users to ensure they are using a patched and updated system in the face of growing threats," the advisory reads.Microsoft, it continues, has warned that the Bluekeep flaw "is potentially 'wormable,' meaning it could spread without user interaction across the internet. We have seen devastating computer worms inflict damage on unpatched systems with wide-ranging impact, and are seeking to motivate increased protections against this flaw."The advisory notes that these are the affected versions of Windows: * Windows XP * Windows Server 2003 * Windows Vista * Windows Server 2008 * Windows 7 * Windows Server 2008 R2Microsoft has issued a patch, but millions of machines are reportedly still vulnerable. The NSA says it's concerned that hackers will use this vulnerability in ransomware and exploit kits that contain other known exploits, increasing their capabilities against other unprotected systems. The Bluekeep vulnerability could also be used to conduct denial of service attacks, according to the agency."NSA urges everyone to invest the time and resources to know your network and run supported operating systems with the latest patches," the advisory continues, also noting that Windows 10 systems are protected against the flaw and that it only affects the named older versions of Windows. "This is critical not just for NSA's protection of National Security Systems but for all networks."

Federal Judge Blocks House Dems’ Challenge to Trump’s Border Wall

Federal Judge Blocks House Dems' Challenge to Trump's Border WallA federal judge in Washington, D.C. ruled Monday against House Democrats in their bid to block President Trump from reallocating Defense Department funds for the construction of his long-promised border wall.U.S. district judge Trevor McFadden found that Congress should rely on a legislative approach to stop the president from funding the construction of his border wall through a national emergency declaration, rather than challenging the administration in court."Congress has several political arrows in its quiver to counter perceived threats to its sphere of power," McFadden wrote in the decision. "These tools show that this lawsuit is not a last resort for the House. And this fact is also exemplified by the many other cases across the country challenging the administration's planned construction of the border wall."Trump declared a national emergency in February in order to unilaterally appropriate $2.5 billion from the Defense Department's anti-drug trafficking funds and $3.6 billion from its construction budget for the construction of a border wall.Pelosi and fellow House Democrats argued in their suit that the allocation of those funds harmed Congress's institutional authority by depriving it of the power of the purse granted to it under the Administrative Procedures Act.The Department of Justice celebrated the decision on Monday as a defense of the administration's constitutional prerogatives."The court rightly ruled that the House of Representatives cannot ask the judiciary to take its side in political disputes and cannot use federal courts to accomplish through litigation what it cannot achieve using the tools the Constitution gives to Congress," a DOJ spokesman said. "The Department looks forward to continuing to defend the administration's lawful actions to address the crisis at the southern border."While the ruling is a positive development for the administration, it does not guarantee the wall's construction. It comes roughly one month after a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the administration from reallocating certain Pentagon funds for the wall's construction, further impeding efforts to secure the $8.5 billion the president claims is necessary to build a satisfactory wall.

All the best new iOS 13 features Apple didn’t reveal at WWDC

Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT

All the best new iOS 13 features Apple didn't reveal at WWDCApple executives took the stage in San Jose, California on Monday morning and gave the world its first look at the company's next-generation software platforms. MacOS 10.15 Catalina is packed full of nifty new features, tvOS 13 gets a great new home screen, and watchOS 6 has all sorts of new features as well as new watch faces. You can read a full recap of all the biggest announcements right here, but it goes without saying that the star of the show during Apple's WWDC 2019 keynote was iOS 13. After last year's iOS 12 update focused almost exclusively on fixing bugs and improving performance, the company's new iOS 13 software shifts gears back to adding new features -- and needless to say, there are far too many new features in iOS 13 for Apple to have covered them all during its keynote presentation. We've already detailed the 15 best new iOS 13 features coming to your iPhone and iPad later this year, and it's a fantastic list. Highlights include the new system-wide Dark Mode users have been clamoring for, swipe typing support on the Apple keyboard, a new secure "Sign in with Apple" feature, and new call filtering capabilities that could eliminate spam calls almost entirely. But what about all the smaller iOS 13 features that Apple didn't have time to cover on stage at WWDC 2019?At the end of the iOS 13 section of Apple's WWDC keynote on Monday, senior vice president of software Craig Federighi noted that there were far too many new iOS 13 features to cover them all. As he said that, a slide flashed on the screen behind him and listed nearly 70 additional new iOS 13 features for the iPhone and iPad that hadn't been discussed on stage. Apple news blog 9to5Mac managed to take a screen captured of the slide in question, and it wrote out all the new iOS 13 features shown on that list. Here's the full rundown:iOS 13 system: * Optimized battery charging * Single sign-on extension * Option to download large apps over cellular * Video downloads optimized for congestion in India * Wi-Fi selection in Control center * Enhanced QR code scanning * Reading goals in Apple Books * Low Data ModeAudio: * Dolby Atmos playback * Bluetooth wireless splitterFaceTime, Phone, and Messages: * Improved search in Messages * Silence unknown callers * FaceTime on Dual SIM * iMessage on dual SIMPhotos: * Location controls for Shared Photos * Search enhancements in PhotosReminders & Notes: * Folder Management in Notes * Customize appearance of Reminders lists * View only collaboration in Notes * More powerful search in Notes * New Checklist Option in NotesMDM & Business: * Business Chat Suggestions * Data separation for BYOD * Managed Apple IDS for business * Modern authentication for device enrolmentCalendar & Mail & Contacts: * Add attachments to events in Calendar * New relationship labels in Contacts * Block sender in Mail * Mute thread in MailKeyboard & Language: * Separate Emoji and Globe Keys * Enhanced language setup * Thai-English bilingual dictionary * Hindi and English bilingual keyboard * Typing predictions for Hindi * Typing predictions for Dutch * Adjustable Chinese handwriting keyboard height * Typing predictions for Vietnamese * Typing predictions for Swedish * Language selection per app * Typing predictions for Cantonese * Typing predictions for Arabic * Vietnamese English bilingual dictionary * Refreshed Home accessory controls * Weak password warnings * Simultaneous phone calls on Dual SIM * Keyboard support for all 22 official Indian languages * New Indian language system fonts * Apple News+ in UK and AustraliaSiri: * Indian English Siri voices * Siri Suggestions in Apple Podcasts * Siri Event Suggestions from Third-party apps * Siri Shortcuts in Home automations * Conversational Siri shortcutsCarPlay & Maps: * Second video stream support in CarPlay * CarPlay irregular screen size support * Hey Siri support in CarPlay * CarPlay adjustable screen size support * Do Not Disturb While Driving in CarPlay * Independent CarPlay app views * Light mode in CarPlay * Improved Report a problem in Maps * Maps Place Card enhancementsSafari: * Updated Safari Start Page * Siri suggestions in Safari * Enhanced anti-fingerprinting protections in SafariAs you can see, there are definitely some gems that Apple didn't get to during the WWDC keynote. "Optimized battery charging" and "Low Data Mode" both sound quite promising, and several of our readers likely fainted when they got to "Improved search in Messages" on the list. The search function in Apple's Messages apps in iOS and in macOS has always been horrible, so we can't wait to see if Apple got its act together in iOS 13. Also worth noting, you won't find mention of the new volume HUD on the list above, but Apple FINALLY fixed the little pop up that appears when you adjust the volume in iOS 13. That's right, it doesn't block the entire middle of the screen anymore! Now that iOS 13 beta 1 is out (here's how to install it on your iPhone) and people are testing on their iPhones, plenty more news about new unannounced iOS 13 features will trickle out over the coming days.

Doctors' organization: calling abortion bans 'fetal heartbeat bills' is misleading

Doctors' organization: calling abortion bans 'fetal heartbeat bills' is misleadingAmerican College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says term does not 'reflect medical accuracy or clinical understanding' Instead of using "fetal heartbeat bills", as the laws are often called by anti-abortion campaigners, the Guardian will make "six-week abortion ban" the preferred term for the laws, unless quoting someone, in order to better reflect the practical effect of the laws. Photograph: Katherine Frey/The Washington Post/Getty Images America's largest professional organization for doctors specializing in women's health has come out against the term "fetal heartbeat bill" to describe abortion bans recently enacted by US states. The president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists called the bills "arbitrary" bans not reflective of fetal development or science. "Arbitrary gestational age bans on abortion at six weeks that use the term 'heartbeat' to define the gestational development being targeted do not reflect medical accuracy or clinical understanding," said Dr Ted Anderson, president of ACOG. The organization represents 58,000 physicians across the US. Sign up for the US morning briefing "Pregnancy and fetal development are a continuum. What is interpreted as a heartbeat in these bills is actually electrically induced flickering of a portion of the fetal tissue that will become the heart as the embryo develops," Anderson said. "Thus, ACOG does not use the term 'heartbeat' to describe these legislative bans on abortion because it is misleading language, out of step with the anatomical and clinical realities of that stage of pregnancy," Anderson said. The ACOG president called on politicians to base policy on "science and evidence". In addition, the Guardian has updated its style guide more accurately to reflect abortion bans spreading across the United States. Instead of using "fetal heartbeat bills", as the laws are often called by anti-abortion campaigners, the Guardian will make "six-week abortion ban" the preferred term for the laws, unless quoting someone, in order to better reflect the practical effect of the laws. State abortion bans have been enacted from Ohio to Kentucky, in a new and severe strategy from rightwing groups pushing to make abortion illegal. The bans, dubbed "heartbeat" bills by supporters, have the practical effect of banning abortion before most women know they are pregnant. Abortion is legal in all 50 states despite the bans. Anti-abortion campaigners hope the court battles will prompt the US supreme court to reconsider the 1973 landmark decision Roe v Wade, which legalized abortion. The laws are all expected to be challenged in court, and are highly unlikely ever to go into effect. While states have long sought to heavily regulate abortion, outright bans on the procedure were once rare. Nevertheless, abortion care has not always remained accessible. Highly restrictive state regulations have driven many clinics out of business. There are six states that each have only one abortion clinic. In Missouri, the state's last remaining abortion clinic is fighting the state health authorities in order to stay open. Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr Sarah Horvath said that accurately describing the bans is important, to avoid confusion among patients and providers alike. "I don't think the coverage tends to line up with medical reality," said Horvath. "No one seems to know what is allowed – and what isn't – even when it's medically appropriate," she said. Several state bans allow for criminal penalties for doctors performing abortions, including a 99-year penalty in Alabama. Physicians said the bans, if they ever went into effect, will have life-threatening consequences for women. "There's this noble ideal you all have," she said about reporters, but added, "But one is a viewpoint, and one is science and medicine."

EXCLUSIVE-GM CEO defends plan to sell Ohio plant to startupGeneral Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra on Wednesday defended the automaker's plan to sell an assembly plant in Ohio, arguing the plan to sell the plant to an electric vehicle start-up was thoroughly vetted and had a chance of success. Barra told Reuters in a brief interview Wednesday after a series of meetings on Capitol Hill that the company did not plan to add a new vehicle to its Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant that ended production in March because it has additional unused U.S. capacity. Last month, GM announced it was in talks to sell the plant to EV startup Workhorse Group Inc and an affiliated, newly formed entity.

Boston’s Straight Pride Parade Is Even Worse Than You Think

Boston's Straight Pride Parade Is Even Worse Than You ThinkChico SanchezThis story originally appeared in Right Richter, a newsletter by Will Sommer. Subscribe now to see what's happening in right-wing media from the safety of your inbox. The internet went wild on Tuesday with the news that Boston would host a Straight Pride Parade for straight people who claim they're an "oppressed majority." One Twitter jokester recommended that the parade take a "straight" route right into the Boston harbor.  While the idea of a few dozen angry straight people marching might be funny, the actual origins of Straight Pride Parade are not. The event is a front for a far-right group founded by notorious right-wing brawler Kyle "Based Stickman" Chapman. Want this in your inbox? Subscribe to Right Richter here.Straight Pride organizer Mark Sahady announced the parade on Facebook, claiming he received permits for the event that would likely take place on August 31. But Sahady isn't just a particularly aggrieved straight dude. Instead, he has a long history participating in controversial right-wing events around Boston as an organizer for Resist Marxism, a group Chapman founded at the height of the fame he earned attacking left-wing anti-fascist activists with his eponymous "stick."Chapman appears to no longer be involved with the group now that he's facing felony charges in two states over two assaults. But Sahady has taken up his position, organizing Resist Marxism events around the Boston area. In Facebook posts, Sahady has endorsed the far-right "helicopter" meme, which calls for liberals to be thrown from helicopters as in Augusto Pinochet's Chile. "We may get to throw anti-American communists from helicopters sooner than we thought," Sahady wrote in one Facebook post. Resist Marxism's politics get even uglier, though. In leaked internal chats published in 2018, members frequently made anti-Semitic jokes and used anti-Semitic slurs. At least one Resist Marxism event had security provided by Patriot Front, a white-nationalist hate group.Sahady isn't the only Straight Pride Parade organizer with ties to Resist Marxism. Another promoter, John Hugo, unsuccessfully ran for Congress last year with an endorsement and organizing support from the group. It's not clear that the parade will even happen, in part because Sahady has a history of failing to pull off his events. Last August, Sahady tried to organize a National March Against Far-Left Violence. The event's Facebook page linked to a website offering free T-shirts for attendees, as long as they provided their names and addresses. The T-shirt site was later revealed to be an antifascist sting against Sahady and his compatriots, some of whom had accidentally handed their names and addresses over to their ideological enemies. A source familiar with the Boston government's permitting process told Right Richter that Sahady had not been granted permit so far. San Francisco to force treatment on mentally ill drug users

San Francisco to force treatment on mentally ill drug usersSan Francisco officials decided Tuesday to force some people with serious mental illness and drug addiction into treatment, even if it goes against the spirit of a city known for its fierce protection of civil rights. Several members of the Board of Supervisors voiced deep concerns Tuesday about the possibility of taking away a person's civil liberties, but the proposal for a pilot program passed 10-1. Mayor London Breed and other supporters say the move — known as conservatorship — is necessary to help people who are often homeless, addicted to drugs and have a mental illness, making them a danger to themselves.

Actually, iTunes isn't deadApple earlier this week finally "killed" iTunes on Mac, just as the rumors that preceded WWDC 2019 claimed it would -- but there's really no reason to panic. macOS Catalina will have independent Music, Podcast, and Apple TV apps, and the iTunes features you might be using right now will be spread between these as well as the Finder, which will handle all the iPhone and iPad backups and sync sessions you need. The changes make perfect sense in light of the evolutions of various Apple services. iTunes is just too crowded to handle everything, especially with the imminent arrival of the Apple TV+ streaming service. So that's what killing iTunes on the Mac means... but if you're a Windows PC, you should know nothing changes and iTunes will still be alive and well for years to come. It's a lot easier for Apple to split the iTunes app into different apps that will handle specific needs on the Mac because these apps ship with the operating system. Once you install macOS Catalina later this year, you'll get the new iTunes experience as explained above.Needless to say, it's far more challenging to pull off the same move on platforms that Apple doesn't own, as is the case with Windows. That's because users would have to download all the new apps from the Windows stores once Apple deprecates the current iTunes version. For the time being, iTunes on Windows remains exactly as it is, Ars Technica explains. Apple said iTunes on Windows will not see any changes and it'll work just like it does now. That doesn't mean Apple will never break it apart, and as I said before, it makes sense to give up iTunes and replace it with multiple apps to handle the various features available in the application. But Windows 10 users will be able to manage all their iTunes digital content -- whether it's music, movies, or podcasts -- from the same app. They'll still be able to back up iPhone and iPad locally using iTunes, as well as sync their content across devices. You know, until Apple decides the Windows version of iTunes needs fixing, too.
