Gun control efforts stalled in Orlando following largest mass shooting in US history Posted: 11 Jun 2017 03:10 PM PDT A year after 49 party-goers were gunned down by a man with a assault-style rifle at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando – the worst mass shooting in modern US history – Democrats in Florida say just about every attempt to pass gun control legislation in the wake of the massacre has been blocked. "These types of weapons are the gold standard of mass murders," said State Representative Carlos Guillermo-Smith, who sponsored an assault weapons ban in tandem with a state senator. Mateen, who had previously been investigated by the FBI on two occasions, walked into a gun store and bought a Sig Sauer MCX just nine days before the killings. |
Puerto Rican nationalist booed, cheered at New York parade Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:53 PM PDT NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar Lopez Rivera may not have officially been honored as a National Freedom Hero in the city's Puerto Rican Day Parade, but the fervent nationalist who spent decades in prison for his involvement with a group responsible for bombings in the 1970s and '80s still got to ride on a float. |

Girl uses first aid learned by reading 'Hunger Games' to help friend who tore leg open Posted: 12 Jun 2017 10:17 AM PDT A 12-year-old girl remembered a technique she read about in one of The Hunger Games novels and used it to tie a tourniquet around a friend's open leg wound. Megan Gething and friend Mackenzie George were playing a marsh in Gloucester, Massachusetts when Mackenzie fell and cut her calf open on a steel pump. Megan quickly used a pair of shorts to fashion a tourniquet on the wound and applied pressure to stem the bleeding. |
Greek families left struggling after successive cuts Posted: 10 Jun 2017 08:24 PM PDT In the living room of his small Athens flat, 40-year-old Dimitris Voutsinos scours the web for job ads -- one of thousands struggling to cope as Greece's economic crisis endures. In May, under pressure from its creditors, the government slashed pensions again and cut tax breaks for 2019 and 2020, even for income just above the poverty level. |

Amazon’s rare sale on Sonos speakers is too good to pass up Posted: 12 Jun 2017 07:43 AM PDT Sonos shrugged off the new HomePod speaker that Apple unveiled during WWDC 2017 last week, which isn't much of a surprise. The HomePod looks like it has a lot to offer, but it won't be anywhere near as versatile or as flexible as Sonos' wireless speaker solution when it comes to speaker variety and to supported services. Music fans know that Sonos is the best in the business, and right now you have a rare opportunity to save some cash on two of the most popular Sonos speakers on the market. From now until the end of the week, Amazon is shaving $50 off a Sonos Play:1 two-pack, and the Sonos SUB Wireless Subwoofer is $100 off. Definitely grab them while supplies last! Pope gives rebel Nigeria priests ultimatum over bishop Posted: 12 Jun 2017 06:41 AM PDT Pope Francis has given church officials in southern Nigeria a 30-day ultimatum to obey him by accepting the nomination of a bishop -- or face being suspended from office. During talks with a Catholic delegation from Nigeria, the pope demanded that priests and church members in the southern diocese of Ahiara write to him personally to "ask his forgiveness", the Holy See said in a statement at the weekend. "Whoever does not do this will be ipso facto suspended a divinis and will lose his current office," it warned. |

Irish PM expresses concern over May's proposed DUP deal Posted: 10 Jun 2017 05:59 PM PDT Irish prime minister Enda Kenny expressed concern Sunday that a proposed alliance between Britain's ruling Conservatives and Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) could pose a "challenge" to peace in the province. In a phone call with British Prime Minster Theresa May, Kenny warned that efforts to shore up her minority government with the hardline Protestant DUP should not put at risk the Good Friday peace accords. |

Macron rivals warn against parliamentary monopoly Posted: 12 Jun 2017 12:17 PM PDT French President Emmanuel Macron's rivals on Monday warned against handing him an overwhelming parliamentary majority that would stifle debate, after his party cruised to victory in the opening round of elections to the National Assembly. Macron's year-old centrist Republic on the Move (REM) party and its allies are tipped to clean up in the 577-member lower house of parliament, winning up to 445 seats -- an unprecedented total for a post-war president. Record low turnout of 49 percent in Sunday's first round detracted from the performance of Macron's untested team, raising concerns over the strength of his mandate. |

Bernie Sanders says Labour party shows the way to beat Donald Trump Posted: 11 Jun 2017 12:45 PM PDT Buoyed by the British Labour Party election gains this week, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Saturday urged a summit of progressive activists who propelled his presidential candidacy to ramp up efforts to win elections and help remake a Democratic Party he deemed a failure. "They won those seats by standing up to the ruling class," he said, referring to the British elections and citing wins by progressive US candidates in several state and local races while writing off losses as evidence liberal progressives could still be competitive even in conservative states. |

Peru's leader calls for arbitration in Venezuela crisis Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:52 AM PDT Peru's President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski called for international arbitration in the Venezuelan crisis but only once political prisoners have been freed, according to an interview published Sunday in a Spanish newspaper. "The fundamental issue is that all political prisoners be released," he told El Pais daily. Once that condition was met then three nations friendly to the Venezuela regime could join three more critical countries to provide international arbitration on the crisis, he added. |
