In Syria's Raqa, anti-IS fighters advance at night Posted: 15 Jun 2017 07:02 PM PDT Faced with an onslaught of weaponised drones, mortar rounds and snipers, US-backed fighters in Syria's Raqa say the cover of night is a good ally against Islamic State group jihadists. The Syrian Democratic Forces are battling to oust the extremists from the northern city after breaking into its first neighbourhood last week. After piercing into and taking the southeastern district of Al-Meshleb, the SDF fighters are now advancing towards the Old City. |

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 12:11 PM PDT The statement – which came without context or reference to any story in particular – left many feeling confused. Some suggested the statement signalled an upcoming scoop, while others thought it was made at the behest of the White House. "What an odd statement - that feels consistent with the White House's recent war on leaks," Jonathan Lemire, White House reporter for The Associated Press, tweeted. |

Amazon is buying Whole Foods for $13.7 billion Posted: 16 Jun 2017 06:30 AM PDT You know how Jeff Bezos is looking for new ideas related to philanthropy? Well, he might be a bit too busy to read everyone's suggestions for the next few days since Amazon just announced a deal to acquire Whole Foods for close to $14 billion. It's a surprising business move that has undoubtedly been in the works for quite some time, but it was just announced on Friday.
Under the terms of the deal, which is pending regulatory approval, Amazon will pay $42 per share to acquire Whole Foods in an all-cash transaction that's valued at $13.7 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of the year. Why is Amazon buying the massive grocery chain? Probably for the great food, considering the quote Bezos gave:
As part of the deal, Whole Foods co-founder and CEO John Mackey will stay on the job, and the company will continue to operate stores under the Whole Foods Market brand. The company's headquarters will stay in Austin, Texas, the press release says — and you can see the entire press release at this link. It's unclear at this time whether Amazon Prime subscribers will get anything out of the deal, and whether Whole Foods products will also be available via Amazon once the deal is finalized. |
US deploys mobile artillery rocket launchers in Syria Posted: 15 Jun 2017 03:10 PM PDT The United States has deployed mobile artillery rocket launchers in southern Syria, aiming to defend its At-Tanaf base where it trains anti-Islamic State forces, Pentagon officials confirmed Thursday. Officials would not say how many of the HIMARS units, a truck-mounted multiple rocket launch system, had been moved into the area. The move sparked a protest from Russia, which supports Assad and said the HIMARS system would be used against Syrian government forces. |

US moves to seize another $540 mn in Malaysia's 1MDB scandal Posted: 15 Jun 2017 11:24 PM PDT The US has acted to seize another $540 million in assets, including a luxury yacht, allegedly bought with money stolen from Malaysia's multibillion-dollar 1MDB fund, a move Kuala Lumpur slammed on Friday as headline-seeking. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is battling allegations that huge sums were looted from the state fund he founded, in complex overseas deals that are being investigated by authorities in several countries. The latest move by US federal prosecutors compounds court cases launched last year in which Washington sought to confiscate more than $1 billion allegedly embezzled by businessmen with political connections in Malaysia -- bringing the total amount US officials say was stolen to $4.5 billion. |

Arrests in Egypt as opposition calls for islands protest Posted: 16 Jun 2017 01:26 AM PDT Egyptian police have arrested dozens of activists in the face of opposition calls for protests on Friday after parliament passed a controversial agreement to hand over two islands to Saudi Arabia. A lawyer working to release the activists said about 50 had been arrested across Egypt since parliament passed the treaty on Wednesday. "We hope the people show up (to protest) because without the people we can't defend what is their right," said former presidential candidate and opposition leader Hamdeen Sabbahi in a video message. |

Russia accuses US of deploying missiles in Syria Posted: 15 Jun 2017 12:07 PM PDT Russia on Thursday accused the US-led coalition of deploying missiles against Syrian troops at a garrison in the east of the country, where rebels battling the Islamic State group are being trained. "Forces of the US-led anti-IS coalition have repeatedly issued strikes on Syrian government forces fighting IS near the Jordanian border. "It's not hard to guess that similar strikes will be continued against contingents of the Syrian army in the future using HIMARS," it said. |

Putin denounces latest sanctions passed by US Senate Posted: 15 Jun 2017 03:37 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday slammed fresh sanctions approved by the US Senate as coming "out of nowhere" and motivated by domestic politics and historical efforts by the West to "contain" Russia. "We know that currently there is a bill in the US Senate regarding toughening sanctions. Why did they start to talk about sanctions again out of nowhere?" Putin said at his annual phone-in with Russian citizens. |

This is the fastest drop-top Audi, ever Posted: 15 Jun 2017 02:51 AM PDT Less than 24 hours after McLaren took the wraps off its latest mid-engined 200mph convertible, Audi has unveiled the R8 Spyder V10 Plus, the fastest and most powerful series production soft top in the company's history. Audi says that thanks to a 600+hp naturally aspirated (i.e., no turbos or superchargers) V10 engine sitting behind the driver's seat but ahead of the rear axle, this particular R8 can hit 203mph (326km/h) and will take just 3.3 seconds to hit 100km/h from standstill. To achieve these figures, Audi has looked to the track for engineering inspiration. |
