5 Reasons Why Amazon Buying Whole Foods Changes Everything Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:32 AM PDT In its biggest acquisition yet, Amazon will purchase Whole Foods for a whopping $13.7 billion in an all cash transaction. This deal marks the beginning of an era where the e-commerce giant pushes to enter the brick-and-mortar world, marking its next grocery-related milestone after it announced plans to launch Amazon Go, a checkout-free grocery store. As grocery stores nationwide are trying to keep up with increasing demands, such as store convenience, competitive prices, and awesome customer service, Whole Foods may end up offering cool new ways to shop. |
Sandy Hook families’ law firm to NBC: Don’t air Megyn Kelly’s Alex Jones interview Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:36 AM PDT A letter to NBC from the families of Sandy Hook victims urged the network to considering the "ethical and legal ramifications" of airing Megyn Kelly's interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Obtained by Politico's Hadas Gold, the letter from a law firm representing several families who lost loved ones in the 2012 Newtown, Conn., attack implies that by airing the controversial interview, NBC would open itself up to possible legal action. "We urge you to consider the ethical and legal ramifications of broadcasting this interview to millions of Americans," the letter read. |

Boeing, Airbus take dogfight to Paris Air Show Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:53 PM PDT The aircraft industry descends on Paris Monday for the world's biggest airshow, a prime battleground for bitter rivals Boeing and Airbus, but also a chance for new kids on the block to snap at the heels of the two giants. Single-aisle planes for short and medium distances are the hottest ticket in the world's civil aviation industry, with airline demand for models in the Airbus A320 family giving the European company an edge, for now, over its American opponent which is racing to return in force to the mid-range segment. Boeing, meanwhile, is to showcase the 737 Max 9 model as its anti-Airbus weapon in a market segment where the capacity to squeeze a few more seats into a narrow-body cabin while eking out increased fuel efficiency over greater ranges is key. |

Feinstein: Trump ‘in for a rude awakening’ if he tries to shut down Russia probe Posted: 16 Jun 2017 10:33 AM PDT Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., unleashed a blistering message in response to President Trump's early morning Twitter tirade in which he both dismissed the Russia probe as a "witch hunt" and appeared to confirm he was being investigated as part of that inquiry. Feinstein raised the possibility that Trump would try to dismiss Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Robert Mueller, the special counsel Rosenstein appointed to oversee the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election. |
Two-Headed Conjoined Porpoises Hauled Up from the Deep Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:53 AM PDT Two-headed conjoined porpoises were recently hauled up by a fishing boat in the North Sea, not far off the coast of the Netherlands. It's not clear exactly why the porpoises died, but the double-headed creatures likely could not swim, said Erwin Kompanje, a researcher at the Natural History Museum and the Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who recently wrote up the case in the June 7 issue of the journal Deinsea. Conjoined twins are a rarity for humans, but they're also extremely rare for harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), Kompanje said. |
In Malaysia fund scandal, DiCaprio returns Oscar won by Brando Posted: 16 Jun 2017 12:49 PM PDT Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio confirmed Friday that he has turned over an Oscar won by Marlon Brando, along with other gifts, amid an inquiry into a multibillion-dollar money-laundering scheme involving a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund. US authorities are seeking to recover billions in money and assets allegedly embezzled by businessmen with political connections in Malaysia. The scandal has rocked the Malaysian governing class, exposing Prime Minister Najib Razak to allegations of corruption, which he has denied. |

Venezuela's chief prosecutor becomes hate figure for Maduro supporters Posted: 16 Jun 2017 02:00 AM PDT As Venezuela's chief prosecutor, Luisa Ortega, has never been the country's most popular figure, but now the insults are being hurled at her by government officials who – until recently – were her allies. Ortega has become a hate figure for supporters of Nicolás Maduro following her criticism of the president's efforts to extend his rule, and his response to a three-month wave of protests in which nearly 70 people have died. |

Seven US soldiers wounded in Afghan 'insider attack' Posted: 17 Jun 2017 08:47 AM PDT Mazar-i-Sharif (Afghanistan) (AFP) - Seven American troops were wounded Saturday in an insider attack by an Afghan soldier at a military base, as the US appears set to boost its troop presence in the country. The shootout at Camp Shaheen near northern Mazar-i-Sharif city is the second "green-on-blue" attack -- where Afghan soldiers turn their weapons on international forces assisting them -- reported this week. |
Why the 2018 Ford Expedition is a real off-roader Posted: 16 Jun 2017 03:38 AM PDT With its new FX4 package, Ford is proving it hasn't forgotten the off-roading faithful that put a premium on their SUV's performance rather than its appearance. In the race to capitalize on the crossover trend, it can be all too easy for car companies to forget that there is a sizable group of drivers that have always been SUV owners because of what these cars are capable of doing in challenging conditions. |

What Trump's new Cuba travel restrictions mean, according to an expert Posted: 16 Jun 2017 12:55 PM PDT President Donald Trump is rolling back a number of his predecessor's policy changes toward Cuba, making good on a campaign pledge he made that likely helped secure votes from conservatives in Florida. The President plans on tightening travel restrictions for Americans who would head to Cuba, and on tightening restrictions for American investment in the island country in order to keep US money from flowing into the hands of the government. The aim, Mr Trump said, is to get more money into the hands of the Cuban people while pushing reforms in the Cuban government to respect human rights, and return American fugitives hiding out on the island. |

US student suffered 'extensive' brain damage in N. Korea Posted: 15 Jun 2017 06:39 PM PDT Doctors treating Otto Warmbier, the US student released by North Korea in a coma this week, said Thursday the 22-year-old had suffered severe brain damage, as his father lashed out at the reclusive regime. Warmbier experienced extensive tissue loss in all regions of the brain, doctors said, but he showed no signs of physical trauma and medical tests offered no conclusive evidence as to the cause of his neurological injuries. |
New Quantum-Entanglement Record Could Spur Hack-Proof Communications Posted: 16 Jun 2017 08:12 AM PDT A Chinese satellite has split pairs of "entangled photons" and transmitted them to separate ground stations 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) apart, smashing the previous distance record for such a feat and opening new possibilities in quantum communication. In quantum physics, when particles interact with each other in certain ways they become "entangled." This essentially means they remain connected even when separated by large distances, so that an action performed on one affects the other. In a new study published online today (June 15) in the journal Science, researchers report the successful distribution of entangled photon pairs to two locations on Earth separated by 747.5 miles (1,203 km). |
