Dramatic Images From Devastating Southern California Wildfires Posted: 06 Dec 2017 09:54 AM PST Southern California residents face growing uncertainty as several fast-moving wildfires continue to engulf tens of thousands of acres while destroying dozens of homes in its path. Flames consumed the hills surrounding Interstate 405 near Los Angeles' famed Getty Center early Wednesday, with the fire lighting up the high terrain in a horrifying, apocalyptic-like display. In haunting photos, rows of homes are seen razed to the ground in Ventura County, where the largest of the fires has overtaken more than 50,000 acres since Monday night. |

Pope wants better translation of phrase on temptation in 'Our Father' prayer Posted: 07 Dec 2017 03:00 AM PST Pope Francis has said the Roman Catholic Church should adopt a better translation of the phrase "lead us not into temptation" in the "Our Father", the best known prayer in Christianity. "That is not a good translation," the pope said in a television interview on Wednesday night. Francis said the Catholic Church in France had decided to use the phrase "do not let us fall into temptation" as an alternative and indicated that it or something similar should be applied worldwide. |
The XB-70 Valkyrie: The Sad Story of the Biggest and Fastest U.S. Bomber Ever Posted: 06 Dec 2017 04:53 PM PST With the growing realization that Soviet SAMs posed an increasing threat to American bombers, the Pentagon started to explore low-level penetration as an alternative. Many leading military strategists of the time believed bombers were too vulnerable to survive the journey into Soviet airspace. As a result, President John F. Kennedy decided to cancel the XB-70 as a frontline bomber program on March 28, 1961. |
North Korea ballistic missile tests forced Singapore Airlines to reroute flights from Seoul Posted: 07 Dec 2017 04:40 AM PST Singapore Airlines changed a flight route between South Korea and the US earlier this year over fears about North Korean missile launches in the Asia-Pacific region, it has emerged. An airline spokesperson told CNNMoney on Wednesday that it had rerouted daily flights between the South Korean capital, Seoul, and Los Angeles after Pyongyang test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in July. On July 28 an Air France flight from Tokyo to Paris, carrying 323 people, passed just 60 miles from the splashdown site of a North Korean missile test, roughly five to ten minutes after it hit the water. The French airline expanded its no-fly zone over North Korea as a result. North Korea's attempts to develop an ICBM to carry a nuclear warhead to strike the American mainland have put commercial airlines operating in the busy East Asian airspace on alert, even though the chances of a plane colliding with a missile are miniscule. According to guidelines issued by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a UN agency in charge of air safety, nations have the "responsibility to issue risk advisories regarding any threats to the safety of civilian aircraft operating in their airspace." Pyongyang, already subject to UN sanctions for its nuclear and missile programme, regularly fails to issue any warnings. The crew of a Cathay Pacific flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong on November 29 reported the sighting of what they believed was a North Korean missile as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere. The North Koreans claimed on that day to have fired the Hwasong-15, their biggest and most powerful missile to date. It reportedly reached 1,000 miles higher than the July launch. Hwasong-15 ICBM - new North Korean missile In a statement, Cathay said the flight was "far from the event location" and that it had been in touch with the relevant authorities but had no plans to change its routes. "We remain alert and review the situation as it evolves," it added. David Wright, a missile defence expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the crew most likely saw the missile early in its flight, rather than at the point of re-entry. "Given the timing, it seems likely that the crew might have seen the first stage burn out and separate from the rest of the missile. This would have happened a few minutes after launch," he wrote. |

Russian military: mission accomplished, Islamic State defeated in Syria Posted: 07 Dec 2017 05:50 AM PST Russia's military said on Thursday it had accomplished its mission of defeating Islamic State in Syria, and there were no remaining settlements there under the group's control. Russian bombers had used unprecedented force in the final stages to finish off the militant group, a senior Russian officer said. "The mission to defeat bandit units of the Islamic State terrorist organization on the territory of Syria, carried out by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, has been accomplished," Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoi, head of the general staff's operations, said on Rossiya 24 TV channel. |
Why the U.S. Marines Love the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle Posted: 06 Dec 2017 04:29 PM PST Marksmanship, the ability to shoot accurately and service targets with the minimum expenditure of ammunition, has always been part of the U.S. Marine Corps ethos. The adoption of the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle over the older M249 Squad Automatic Weapon marks a return to that ethos across the service at the small unit level. More accurate and capable of accomplishing its mission with fewer expended rounds, the M27 is now being considered as the front-line rifle not only for a handful of squad members but across the Corps' front line units. |

US House approves easing of interstate rules on concealed guns Posted: 06 Dec 2017 07:22 PM PST US lawmakers voted Wednesday to allow gun owners to carry concealed firearms across state lines, a controversial bill that critics say is aimed at undermining national gun control efforts. The move came two months after the worst mass shooting in modern US history, when a gunman who had taken a vast arsenal into a Las Vegas hotel fired down on concert-goers and killed 58. It passed the House of Representatives 231 to 198, after six Democrats joined all but 14 Republicans in supporting the bill, which will also need Senate passage if it is to become law. |

U.S. to deny visas to Cambodian officials over opposition crackdown Posted: 06 Dec 2017 06:56 PM PST By Eric Walsh and Prak Chan Thul WASHINGTON/PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday it would restrict entry to people involved in the Cambodian government's actions to undermine democracy, including the dissolution of the main opposition party and imprisonment of its leader. The visa sanctions were the toughest steps by any Western country since a crackdown on critics of Prime Minister Hun Sen ahead of an election next year in which the authoritarian leader seeks to extend more than three decades in power. "We call on the Cambodian government to reverse course by reinstating the political opposition, releasing Kem Sokha, and allowing civil society and media to resume their constitutionally protected activities," the State Department said in a statement. |

FBI Director Defends Bureau's 'Brave Men And Women' After Trump Twitter Attack Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:11 AM PST FBI Director Chris Wray, who took over the bureau in August, appeared before the House Judiciary Committee for an oversight hearing on Thursday. Under questioning from House Judiciary Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Wray responded directly to Trump's tweet, saying there was "no shortage of opinions out there." He then described the FBI he knows: a bureau full of tens of thousands of "brave men and women" working hard to keep Americans "safe from harm" from threats like gang violence, child predators and terrorists. He spoke of being inspired by the recent graduates of FBI academy in Quantico, and of the response teams the FBI sends into harm's way. |
