Shocking video shows owner of animal sanctuary dragged away by lion he raised Posted: 02 May 2018 05:31 AM PDT A lion whose attack on a man at a wildlife area in South Africa was recorded in a graphic video has been killed. The News24 media outlet reported Wednesday that a staff member at Marakele Predator Centre in Limpopo province killed the lion, named Shamba, after it mauled Michael Hodge, the owner of the facility. The video shows Hodge walking in an enclosure behind Shamba and then running for an exit when the lion turns and chases him. |

Indian villagers take revenge after three children killed by dogs Posted: 02 May 2018 01:07 AM PDT Angry Indian villagers killed 13 stray dogs after three children were mauled to death by the animals on the same day, officials said Wednesday. Villagers in Khairabad in Uttar Pradesh state took the law into their own hands after being gripped by panic over daily attacks that according to media reports have now left 14 children dead since January. The three children, all aged under 12, were killed by packs of dogs in separate incidents on Tuesday as they collected mangoes in fields outside the village. |

What Mueller's questions for Trump reveal about the investigation Posted: 01 May 2018 12:46 PM PDT The list of questions special counsel Robert Mueller has for President Trump show that his investigation is much broader than previously realized, and touches on his business dealings in Russia and continued questions about possible collusion. If Mueller seeks to compel Trump's testimony, the issue could wind up before the Supreme Court. |

Defectors send bottles of food and facts to N. Korea Posted: 01 May 2018 02:10 AM PDT North Korean defectors sent water bottles filled with rice and K-pop-loaded USB sticks floating towards their homeland Tuesday, even as the two Koreas removed border loudspeakers following a rare summit last week. The North's leader Kim Jong Un and the South's president Moon Jae-in agreed last week to "completely cease all hostile acts" along the Demilitarized Zone from May 1, including loudspeaker broadcasts and leaflet balloon launches. Seoul is playing into Pyongyang's hands by depriving ordinary North Koreans of much-needed information, Jung said. |

Indian officials lament inaction of cities with world's worst air Posted: 02 May 2018 06:00 AM PDT By Neha Dasgupta and Krishna N. Das NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Only a handful of India's 100 most polluted cities have drawn up plans to combat air pollution despite being asked to do so three years ago, senior government officials said on Wednesday after a damning report by the World Health Organisation. India is home to the world's 14 most polluted cities, the WHO said, based on the amount of particulate matter under 2.5 micrograms found in every cubic meter of air. Environment ministry officials said the WHO's findings were embarrassing but not surprising. |
John Moore's 'Undocumented': Immigration at and militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border Posted: 01 May 2018 10:40 AM PDT Since 2010, Getty Images special correspondent John Moore has focused on U.S. immigration, creating a comprehensive photographic record of undocumented immigration and the militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border. With exclusive access to immigrants at all points of their journeys, ICE agents, border patrol agents, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and dozens of NGOs here and abroad, Moore's Undocumented (Powerhouse Books) is a deeply researched perspective of a complex issue. For its broad scope and compassionate storytelling, Moore's body of work is an essential record of U.S. immigration. Undocumented features essays and photos from Central America and Mexico about the journey north, the border and securing the frontier, life in a divided nation, and the experience of being detained and deported. Undocumented also features several portrait series, including undocumented migrants, prisoners in immigration jails, and new American citizens. John Moore is a special correspondent for Getty Images. He has taken photographs in 65 countries on six continents and was posted internationally for 17 years — first in Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt and Pakistan. He returned to the U.S. in 2008. Moore has won top awards throughout his career, including the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography, World Press Photo honors, the John Faber Award and the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club, Photographer of the Year from Pictures of the Year International, the NPPA and Sony World Photography Organization. Moore is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied radio, television and film. He lives with his family in Stamford, Conn. Undocumented by John Moore will have its exhibition opening, book signing and a talk on May 1, 2018, at 7 p.m. at the Half King Photo Series. It will be led by Anna Van Lenten, curator of the Half King Photography Series. The exhibition will run until June 17. A limited number of signed book copies will be available for $50, with proceeds going to the Chris Hondros Fund (cash only). The First Step to Peace in Korea Has Been Taken—Now the White House Must Follow Posted: 01 May 2018 04:42 PM PDT The United States is the 800-pound gorilla with respect to peace prospects on the Korean Peninsula. The sight of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stepping across the de facto border at the Demilitarized Zone was powerful symbolism. Perhaps even more important was the agreement that Kim signed with South Korean president Moon Jae-in formally ending the state of war that began with North Korea's 1950 invasion of the South. |
Mom allegedly killed 2-year-old daughter, attacked officers trying to revive her Posted: 02 May 2018 03:11 AM PDT Police in New York's Westchester County allege that a 28-year-old mother killed her 2-year-old daughter Saturday — less than 24 hours after refusing to comply with a court order transferring custody of the child to the girl's father. Cynthia Arce, 28, was arrested Tuesday at the Westchester County Medical Center where she was being treated for a gunshot wound. The Journal News reports Arce slashed two officers who responded to her home in Mamaroneck as they tried to help the injured toddler. |
Emmanuel Macron raises eyebrows after calling Australian Prime Minister’s wife 'delicious' Posted: 02 May 2018 06:56 AM PDT Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has raised eyebrows during his visit to Australia by calling prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's wife Lucy "delicious". At the end of a joint news conference between the two leaders, the 40-year old French president turned to thank Mr Turnbull for his hospitality. "I want to thank you for your welcome," he said, before raising the Gallic charm a notch by adding: "Thank you and your delicious wife for your warm welcome." Mr Macron's interesting choice of English prompted instant mirth on social media, amid some confusion over his intent. The jury appears to be out over whether it was an odd, but deliberate play on words or a linguistic slip-up. Macron just said he wanted to thank Malcolm Turnbull and his "delicious wife". You can take the man out of France but...— Alice Workman (@workmanalice) May 2, 2018 Some observers thought he may have used the word "delicious" as a deliberate joke, coming just seconds after Mr Turnbull referred to the French president's imminent lunch with members of Sydney's French community. Others suggested that Mr Macron, who prides himself on speaking fluent English, simply fell foul of a "false friend". The French word for delicious - délicieux - can also translate as "delightful", even if it is a rather antiquated - some would argue sexist - term. The potential for linguist slip-ups is not all one-way however, and there is ample potential for English-speakers to fall foul of French. Emmanuel Macron poses with Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy Turnbull outside the Sydney Opera House Credit: AFP One bloomer to avoid at all costs is to use the French word "excité" to describe oneself as excited; in French it means you are sexually aroused. If it was a linguistic slip, Mr Macron is by no means the first leader to experience translation problems. Arguably the most infamous supposed gaffe was John F Kennedy's legendary claim: "Ich bin ein Berliner", which could mean "I'm a Berliner" or "I'm a doughnut". Emmanuel Macron is by no means the first leader to experience translation problems Credit: LUDOVIC MARIN/ AFP In 2009, France's Europe minister, Pierre Lellouche, sparked a diplomatic incident by branding Prime Minister David Cameron's pledge to reclaim EU powers "pathetic". The term in French is often translated as "moving", "touching" or "poignant". One solution would be to avoid English altogether. That would clearly be to the liking of France's ambassador to the EU, Philippe Léglise-Costa, who walked out of a meeting with fellow EU envoys last week in Brussels in disapproval at the use of English. He was said to have exclaimed: "Monsieur, Non!" |

Hawaii volcano could erupt after 250 earthquakes recorded in 24 hours Posted: 02 May 2018 04:05 AM PDT A Hawaiian volcano could be set to erupt after hundreds of earthquakes and the collapse of a crater floor. Lava may burst through the ground east of Kilauea, the most active of the five volcanoes that form the state's main island, geologists have warned. More than 250 earthquakes have been detected since a crater floor collapsed at the Pu'u O'o vent in the shield volcano's eastern rift zone earlier this week. |

Armenian protest leader pauses strike for talks with ruling party Posted: 02 May 2018 11:49 AM PDT By Margarita Antidze and Hasmik Mkrtchyan YEREVAN (Reuters) - The leader of a protest movement that has rocked Armenia on Tuesday called a pause in a campaign of civil disobedience while he seeks assurances that the ruling party will back him to be the next prime minister. After a day of protests that blocked roads and railways and brought parts of the country to a standstill, a senior official with the ruling party hinted it may be willing to back Nikol Pashinyan when his candidacy for the premier's job comes up for a vote in parliament next week. Pashinyan - a 42-year-old former journalist who has spent time in jail on charges of fomenting unrest - said that on the face of it the ruling Republican Party was conceding defeat. |

Rare eye cancer detected in 18 people from two small communities in North Carolina and Alabama Posted: 01 May 2018 01:03 PM PDT Eighteen people have been diagnosed with the same type of rare eye cancer - including three university friends - leading researchers to push for funding to find connections, a cause, and a cure. The melanoma, a type of cancer that develops in melanin - the pigment that gives skin its colour, only occurs in about six out of one million people but at least 18 people have been diagnosed with ocular melanoma recently - curiously all have ties to one or both of the communities in Huntersville, North Carolina or Auburn, Alabama. To add to the mystery, three friends who met at Auburn University: Juleigh Green, Allison Allred and Ashley McCrary are all being treated for the disease. |

Tyson Foods backs Israeli startup to grow meat in the lab Posted: 02 May 2018 04:49 AM PDT Tyson Foods , the largest U.S. meat processor, has invested in an Israeli biotech company developing a way to grow affordable meat in a laboratory that takes live animals out of the equation. Future Meat Technologies focuses on producing fat and muscle cells that are the core building blocks of meat, and is one of several firms working on technology to match rising demand for meat without adding more pressure on land from livestock. The firm's founder and chief scientist, Yaakov Nahmias, said cultured meat typically had a production price of about $10,000 per kg but so far his company had reduced that to $800/kg and had "a clear roadmap to $5-$10/kg by 2020." Tyson's venture capital arm has supported the Jerusalem-based startup by co-leading $2.2 million in seed investment. |

When using a 230-volt 32-amp connection and the optional 7.2 kW onboard charger, the battery in the new Cayenne E-Hybrid is capable of being recharged in just 2.3 hours. |
