Seven US Navy crew missing, commander hurt in crash off Japan Posted: 17 Jun 2017 07:41 AM PDT The US and Japan were conducting a major search operation Saturday to find seven missing American sailors after their navy destroyer collided with a much larger container ship, crushing the side of the military vessel. Planes, boats and helicopters scoured the seas off Japan's Pacific coast in a bid to find the crew who disappeared in the predawn accident, which also left the USS Fitzgerald's commander injured. The collision between the 154-metre (500 foot) guided missile destroyer and 222-metre Philippine-flagged container ship ACX Crystal happened around 2:30 am (1730 GMT Friday) off the coast of the Izu peninsula, southwest of Tokyo. |

Brazil's Temer running 'criminal organization,' tycoon accuser says Posted: 17 Jun 2017 10:51 AM PDT JBS chairman Joesley Batista caused a major political uproar last month when he handed to authorities, in connection with a wide-reaching corruption scandal, an audio recording in which Temer appeared to condone the payment of hush money to a former lawmaker now in prison. Batista's remarks were made in his first interview since he clinched a plea bargain deal with authorities as the nationwide anti-graft operation codenamed "Car Wash" began targeting his business dealings. Batista agreed to cooperate in exchange for avoiding a conviction. |

Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, a flamboyant 44-year-old candidate for the Republicans party, was canvassing for votes at a Paris market on Thursday when a man called her a "stupid bobo" -- a blend of hipster and bourgeois -- and shoved her leaflets in her face, causing her to fall. Vincent Debraize -- mayor of Champignolles, a small village in Normandy in northern France -- denied he had verbally or physically assaulted her, Kosciusko-Morizet's lawyer Xavier Autain told AFP. |

Science Leader No More? China Challenges US Dominance Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:50 AM PDT The United States still leads the world in scientific research, at least in publishing the most biomedical studies in top-tier journals and spending the most money on research and development (R&D). America's dominance in the scientific world is slowly shrinking, the researchers found, largely because China has invested vast amounts of money in science over the past two decades. In 2015, China's biomedical research teams ranked No. 4 on the top 10 list for the total number of new discoveries published in six top-tier journals, the researchers said. |

Speaking at the church's monthly Fast and Testimony session, the girl, Savannah, said she was a child of "heavenly parents" who had "made me to be gay", according to a video taken by someone in the audience which has been watched by more than 200,000 people. Duterte, 72, attended a ceremony commemorating the founding of a province and later met with troops in Butuan city, both in the southern region of Mindanao. Responding to questions from reporters, a jovial Duterte said: "My state of health is -- what you see is what you get," he said, adding that his last medical examination was last year. |

Deadlocked Cosby jury asks about 'reasonable doubt' Posted: 16 Jun 2017 07:55 PM PDT The deadlocked US jury battling to reach a verdict in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial asked the judge Friday to define "reasonable doubt" and again asked to hear from the fallen star's testimony. The 79-year-old pioneering black actor could face spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against 44-year-old Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia mansion in January 2004. The 12-member jury had told Judge Steven O'Neill on Thursday that they were deadlocked, but the Pennsylvania judge ordered them to continue with no cut-off point to stop trying to reach a unanimous agreement. |

Tesla mechanics rescue a cute kitten that got stuck inside a Model X bumper Posted: 17 Jun 2017 01:52 PM PDT Of all the things that could possibly go wrong with your electric self-driving car, finding a kitten inside your bumper may be the cutest of them all. An unnamed Model X owner uploaded two clips to YouTube on Saturday that show a teeny kitten trapped inside the bumper of his vehicle. "So this morning, I heard a meow in my garage," the man said in the clip. "And we don't have a cat." After narrowing down the meows to his vehicle, then the rear bumper, the man decided to bring his car into a Tesla service center to get a little help rescuing the cat safely. The Virginia shooting fallout was predictably partisan. Can this ever be fixed? Posted: 17 Jun 2017 04:00 AM PDT Members of the crowd at the annual congressional baseball game call for unity – but will they ever truly get it? It would be hard to imagine an institution more out of tune with the prevailing tone of modern American politics than the annual congressional baseball game. The Republican and Democratic teams play each other to win, but they do so in a spirit of friendship across the aisle that is all but nonexistent on Capitol Hill these days. |

I think Razer accidentally made the perfect portable battery Posted: 17 Jun 2017 09:00 AM PDT Razer recently announced a new flagship laptop, the Razer Blade Stealth. It looks like a worthy successor to the old Razer Blade, one of the best Windows laptops out there, but the thing that really caught my attention is the battery pack Razer made for it. A couple companies have taken stabs at making external battery packs for laptops before, most notably Dell with the XPS 13. They're not a bad idea, but since Amazon is already awash with cheap Anker packs, it takes something special to stand out.
The Razer Power Bank is what you'd probably get if you sat down and designed your perfect (within the laws of physics) external power bank. It has two Qualcomm QuickCharge compatible USB-A ports, which are ideal for charging every single smartphone you can buy right now. QuickCharge is a proprietary standard that allows for faster charging that the USB standard, and it's what allows good Android phones to charge faster than the 10 Watts allowed by USB. There's also a USB-C port that can push up to 45W, which allows for a lightweight USB-C laptop to be charged as well. It won't work for full-speed charging of a MacBook Pro, but works for things like the Retina MacBook, Razer's new Blade Stealth, or the XPS 13. All of this is housed in a lightweight and strong-looking aluminum chassis that doesn't have any of Razer's trademark blinking lights. The battery inside is 12,800mAh, good for about a 40% charge on most laptops or juicing up a phone a couple times. It's not an off-the-grid power replacement, but should allow you to last out the longest of plane flights. Pricing is the only problem: it's $150, which is downright painful for a battery pack. But look at it this way: if Apple offered the same thing for the Retina MacBook, people would be saying it's the greatest dongle accessory ever made. |

Amazon deal seen as disruptor of grocery business Posted: 17 Jun 2017 06:24 PM PDT Amazon's deal to buy Whole Foods Market injects even greater pressure into the food and grocery sectors at a time when e-commerce is already roiling retailers. The tech giant's $13.7 billion acquisition of the upscale, niche grocery chain was described as a seismic event by industry analysts, despite Whole Foods' relatively small size. The deal prompted jokes and semi-serious posts on Twitter about a space-age shopping era with Amazon's artificial intelligence program Alexa replacing cashiers and ordering drone deliveries of kale. |
