Britain 'deeply concerned' by Palestinian president's Holocaust remarks Posted: 03 May 2018 06:49 AM PDT Britain said on Thursday that recent remarks by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the Holocaust were "deeply concerning" and unhelpful to peace in the region. Israel has accused Mr Abbas of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial after the Palestinian leader suggested in a speech that historic persecution of European Jews had been caused by their conduct. "Palestinian President Abbas's comments at the Palestinian National Congress were deeply concerning. Any attempt to justify or explain away any element of the Holocaust is unacceptable," Britain's Middle-East minister Alistair Burt said in a statement. "President Abbas has shown a commitment to non-violence and a two-state solution. But his recent rhetoric does not serve the interests of the Palestinian people and is deeply unhelpful to the cause of peace." Mr Abbas said in his speech that Jews living in Europe had suffered massacres "every 10 to 15 years in some country since the 11th century and until the Holocaust". Citing books written by various authors, Mr Abbas argued: "They say hatred against Jews was not because of their religion, it was because of their social profession. So the Jewish issue that had spread against the Jews across Europe was not because of their religion, it was because of usury and banks." Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas waves in Ramallah on Tuesday Credit: REUTERS/Mohamad Torokman Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday accused Mr Abbas of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial. Jewish groups and diplomats also condemned Mr Abbas' comments, made in a speech on Monday to the Palestinian National Council, that Jews had suffered historically not because of their religion but because they had served as bankers and money lenders. "It would appear that, once a Holocaust denier, always a Holocaust denier," Mr Netanyahu said on Twitter. "I call upon the international community to condemn the grave anti-Semitism of Abu Mazen (Abbas), which should have long since passed from this world." On Thursday, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) parliament was preparing to hand its authority over to a smaller council in a move seen as a concentration of power in the hands of President Mahmoud Abbas's loyalists. The Palestinian National Council agreed Thursday to grant the 115-member Central Council authority to assume the political body's powers, such as appointing a successor to the 83-year-old Palestinian leader and resolving the decade-long rift with the rival Hamas party ruling Gaza. Abbas aide Ahmad Majdalani says the move will "make it easier for the PLO to handle political developments, and to fill any vacuum in PLO positions." The Palestinian National Council, which met this week for the first time in over two decades, was set to formally announce the measure Thursday evening. |

Starbucks agrees compensation with black men arrested while they waited for a friend Posted: 03 May 2018 03:24 AM PDT Two black men who were arrested as they waited for a friend in a Philadelphia Starbucks last month have reached settlements with the coffee chain and the city. The arrest of Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson on 12 April was captured on video and widely shared online, sparking protests in Pennsylvania over accusations of racial profiling. Mr Robinson and Mr Nelson have now dropped their legal action against the city, agreeing to a symbolic $1 each in compensation and the commitment of $200,000 (£150,000) from officials to fund an entrepreneurship program for public school students. The men, both 23, also reached a confidential financial settlement with Starbucks, who also offered them the opportunity to complete their undergraduate degrees at Arizona State University with full tuition coverage. "We all recognise the importance of communication about differences and solutions, and that we will be measured by our action not words," they said in a joint statement. Mr Robinson added: "It's not a right-now thing … but I feel like we will see the true change over time." Starbucks issued an apology for the incident which saw a store manager call the police when the pair sat down before making an order as they waited for a friend to arrive. The company responded by closing more than 8,000 of its US stores for an afternoon of racial bias training, with Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson also apologising personally to the two men. Demonstrators protest over the arrests of Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson Credit: AP "I want to thank Donte and Rashon for their willingness to reconcile," said Mr Johnson. "I welcome the opportunity to begin a relationship with them to share learnings and experiences. "Starbucks will continue to take actions that stem from this incident to repair and reaffirm our values and vision for the kind of company we want to be." Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson appear on Good Morning America Credit: ABC / Getty Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said the incident had "evoked a lot of pain" and put the city under a "national spotlight for unwanted reasons". "I am pleased to have resolved the potential claims against the city in this productive manner," he added. |
Thieves steal 'convoy' of pickups from US auto plant Posted: 03 May 2018 03:39 PM PDT A group of thieves staged a brazen theft Thursday at an automotive assembly plant in the US state of Michigan, crashing through a security gate and driving off with a convoy of newly-minted pickup trucks. The early morning heist targeted Fiat Chrysler's popular Dodge Ram pickup trucks made at a plant in Warren, a suburb near Detroit. Police believe the thieves snuck onto an assembly plant storage lot around 4 a.m. and broke into the expensive trucks -- which retail for anywhere from $27,000 to $53,000. |

Trump team demands China slash U.S. trade surplus by $200 billion, cut tariffs Posted: 04 May 2018 10:24 AM PDT By Sue-Lin Wong and David Lawder BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has demanded that China cut its U.S. trade surplus by $200 billion, end subsidies for advanced technology industries and sharply cut import tariffs to U.S. levels, two people familiar with U.S.-China trade talks said on Friday. The lengthy list of demands was presented to Beijing prior to the start of talks Thursday and Friday between top-level Trump administration officials and their Chinese counterparts to try to sort out disputes that have threatened a damaging trade war between the world's two largest economies. The talks ended with China's Xinhua news agency describing them as "constructive, candid and efficient" but with disagreements that remain "relatively big." The U.S. side has yet to give its account of the talks, and there was no sign that President Donald Trump would back off on his threat to impose tariffs on up to $150 billion in Chinese goods over allegations of intellectual property theft. |
