Slovakia defends Georgia's territorial integrity
The Slovak Foreign Ministry defended the principle of territorial integrity and the border inviolability principle in connection with Georgia and the settlement of the conflicts on its territory, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
"As one of a few European Union countries Slovakia can insist on the territorial integrity of Georgia on the principle as it insisted in the case of Serbia and Kosovo," the statement said.
Slovakia is one of the countries that have not recognized independence of Kosovo from Serbia.
Slovakia has provided humanitarian aid to Georgia amounting to 5.6 million Slovak crowns (280,000 U.S. dollars) in order to solve the humanitarian crisis in the country.
The ministry said in a statement last week that it respects and supports Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity in its internationally recognized borders, and all actions that threaten these principles are unacceptable.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia broke from central Georgian rule during wars in the early 1990s after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. But their self-proclaimed independence is not recognized internationally.
