Ballots and bullets: Mexico's bloody election campaign Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:25 AM PDT It is one of the lasting images of Mexico's election campaign: as a Congressional candidate poses for a selfie with a supporter, a man in a baseball cap calmly approaches and shoots him in the back of the head. Fernando Puron, who was running for Congress in the northern state of Coahuila, is one of 136 politicians murdered since candidate registration for Sunday's elections in Mexico opened in September, according to the consulting firm Etellekt. It is by far the bloodiest Mexican campaign on record, as the violence gripping the country has exploded massively into the political world. |

Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters defiant, but rally turnout hits a low Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:23 AM PDT By Venus Wu HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong's annual pro-democracy protest saw one of the lowest turnouts in history, as thousands braved sweltering heat to protest against Beijing's tightening grip over the city on Sunday, the 21st anniversary of its return to Chinese rule. Hong Kong's opposition has lost much steam in the past year, which saw elected pro-democracy legislators disqualified and some of the most prominent activists jailed. Against the fall of Hong Kong." Palestinians call for 'revenge' at funeral of boy killed by Israeli fire Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:44 AM PDT Thousands of Palestinians on Saturday attended the funeral of the 11-year-old son of a Hamas military commander killed by Israeli fire in the southern Gaza Strip, with mourners demanding "revenge". Yasser Abu al-Naja, whose father is a member of Hamas's military wing, was shot in the head on Friday in border clashes near the southern city of Khan Yunis. Senior members of Hamas, which rules the blockaded Gaza Strip, and commanders of its Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades attended the funeral. |

The supreme court has taken a sledgehammer to the New Deal Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:00 AM PDT Of the three decisions the US supreme court handed down this week, the gay wedding cake case and travel ban cases were the latest battles in the culture wars that Republicans long have waged. The Janus decision declaring that public sector employees cannot be required to pay fees to the unions that represent them went beyond culture to the very meaning of the American government and how Republicans define it. Since the 1930s, when then president Franklin Delano Roosevelt promised to break the hold of moneyed men on the government and broker "a new deal for the American people", a cabal of reactionaries resolved to destroy the new government Democrats created. |

Iran calls for calm after water protests, clashes Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:41 AM PDT Iran called for calm on Sunday after protests in a southern city over water shortages turned violent overnight with reports of police shooting at demonstrators who attacked banks and public buildings. "No one has been killed in the unrest and just one person has been wounded in a shooting," said Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, quoted by the state news agency IRNA. "Our effort is to bring these protests to an end as soon as possible with restraint from police and the cooperation of authorities, but if the opposite happens, the judiciary and law enforcement forces will carry out their duties," Rahmani Fazli was quoted as saying. |

Interior minister offers to resign, in blow to German coalition Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:13 PM PDT By Jörn Poltz and Thomas Escritt MUNICH/BERLIN (Reuters) - German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer offered his resignation to party colleagues late on Sunday, party officials said, escalating a row over migration with Chancellor Angela Merkel that threatens her fragile government. Seehofer said he was ready to step down as minister and as chair of his Christian Social Union (CSU) at a meeting where his party's leadership was discussing whether to accept immigration proposals Merkel brought back from Brussels last week. The move makes the future of Merkel's government even more uncertain, since her Christian Democrats party (CDU) relies on the Bavarian conservative CSU to maintain power through a coalition formed three months ago to end a political vacuum. |

Rebels, Russia pursue talks over battered south Syria: monitor Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:14 AM PDT Syrian rebels and local officials pursued talks with regime ally Russia on Sunday over the fate of a key southern region facing a government offensive, a Britain-based monitor said. The Jordan-backed talks came as a tentative calm reigned over most fronts in the southern province of Daraa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. A "ceasefire has largely held since Saturday at 7:00 pm (1600 GMT) to facilitate the ongoing negotiations," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said. |

Great white spotted off Spain in decades first: marine group Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:08 PM PDT A great white shark was spotted in waters off Spain's Balearic Islands this week in what is the first such sighting by scientists in at least 30 years, a marine conservation group said Saturday. The Alnitak group captured footage of the shark, which it said was five metres (16 feet) long, on Thursday in the seas off Cabrera island and followed it for over an hour, it said on its Facebook page, posting a picture. "In the past years there have been possible unconfirmed sightings and various rumours, but this is the first scientific verification of the presence of a Carcharodon (great white shark) in Spanish waters in at least 30 years," it wrote. |
