This Android phone does such a great job of highlighting the iPhone 8’s biggest potential problem Posted: 29 Jun 2017 09:08 AM PDT Earlier this morning, we took a look at the most impressive iPhone 8 leak to date. Using CAD drawings that are believed to have leaked from a Foxconn factory, someone was able to build an iPhone 8 mockup out of real metal and glass. The subsequent video is likely our best look yet at what's coming later this summer when Apple unveils its next-generation iPhone 8 flagship phone. Of course, there's one major question that no iPhone 8 dummy will ever be able to answer: what are Apple's plans for that cutout at the top of the iPhone 8's display. There are two different directions Apple could go, and a new photo of an unreleased Android phone reminds us of just how awful the first option would be. Pictured above is an upcoming new phone from a company called Essential, which posted the image to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Founded by Andy Rubin, one of the creators of the Android operating system, the company's first smartphone is set to be released later this year. It's a neat sounding phone with cutting-edge specs, and it follows the current trend of barely-there bezels most of the way around the display. As your eye traces the perimeter of the Essential phone's screen, it inevitably stops in one particular spot. Yes, it's that hideous cutout at the top of the screen that takes a huge bite out of whatever graphics are displayed on the phone at any given time. Needless to say, it's a huge step in the wrong direction in terms of user experience. According to all the leaks and rumors we've seen so far, Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 will have a similar cutout at the top of the display, where the phone's camera, sensors, and ear speaker will be located. The question, of course, is whether Apple plans to take a big bite out of the graphics displayed on the phone, or if it plans to use a smarter implementation like the one we described earlier this month. As a reminder, here's what the iPhone 8 might look like if Apple takes the same path as Essential: And here's what the iPhone 8 might look like if Apple uses the top portions of the display as I described: http://media.zenfs.com/en_US/News/BGR_News/db8c-1zxcaar6fn.jpg?quality=98&strip=all&strip=all With this solution, the top portions of the display are reserved only for status bar items, and the background always remains black. This way, you won't have a huge chunk taken out of the UI as you use the phone. There are a few question marks here like what happens in landscape mode, and it only works if the face of the phone is black, which would mean no silver, gold, or rose gold iPhone 8. That sounds crazy, but remember that the iPhone 8 is just one of three new iPhones set to launch this year. It's entirely possible that the iPhone 8 will be made available only in black, while the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus launch with a wider color selection. Apple is expected to unveil all three new iPhone models in September, though rumors suggest the iPhone 8 might not be released until sometime in October. |

Apple is suspiciously interested in Fisker’s electric car Posted: 29 Jun 2017 02:54 PM PDT Earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the unusual step of confirming Apple's interest in developing self-driving car technologies. During a recent interview with Bloomberg, Cook was asked about Apple's aspirations in the automotive space. Responding quickly, Cook said: "We're focusing on autonomous systems. It's a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects." Notably, there have also been reports that Apple's interest in designing and manufacturing their own branded car have subsided amid a number of technical hurdles.
Curiously, a Fisker Emotion -- an EV with 400 miles of range that will presumably take on Tesla -- was recently spotted at Apple headquarters in Cupertino today. And interestingly enough, the Emotion's appearance came about after Apple engineers indicated that they wanted to take a look at the car's underlying technology. The Detroit Bureau reports:
Additionally, Henrik Fisker tweeted out the following yesterday evening. As anyone who has been to or even seen Apple's current headquarters, it's clear that Fisker was over at 1 Infinite Loop. https://twitter.com/FiskerOfficial/status/879934037204193280 Range aside, the Fisker Emotion appears to be a technical marvel, with a fast-charging system that enables the vehicle to charge up in just nine minutes. As we noted a few weeks back, the Emotion's impressive battery system is based on supercapacitors using graphene as opposed to the more traditional lithium-ion batteries used in vehicles like the Tesla Model S. |

OK seriously, we need to talk about the crazy iPhone 8 video that just leaked Posted: 29 Jun 2017 07:34 AM PDT As exciting as the upcoming launch of a new iPhone can be, it's also fairly easy for big-time tech fans to grow numb. Especially this year, since iPhone 8 leaks starting pouring in months ahead of schedule. We've seen a constant flow of leaks and rumors hit the web, with new revelations popping up on an almost daily basis now. Most recently, the leaks have focused on the iPhone 8's now-final design, which BGR showed the world back in May. We've seen iPhone 8 renders leak, we've seen iPhone 8 dummy models leak, and we've seen third-party cases and screen protectors leak. Needless to say, we can get a pretty good idea of what Apple's upcoming new flagship iPhone will look like by piecing all of that together. Of course, imagining the iPhone 8 is one thing and seeing the iPhone 8 is another thing entirely. Now, thanks to a freshly leaked video, it appears as though we've seen exactly what Apple's new iPhone 8 is going to look like. And yes, it's absolutely stunning. The video in question was put together by gadget leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer in conjunction with a website called Tiger Mobiles, and we first showed it to you on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after it was posted. It doesn't show us an actual iPhone 8. Instead, it shows a mockup made from real glass and metal that is based on leaked iPhone 8 CAD drawings that are believed to be accurate. In other words, it's not the real thing, but in all likelihood it might as well be. The real takeaway here is simple: Apple's iPhone 8 looks fantastic. For reasons unknown to anyone outside of Apple, the company decided to reuse the same iPhone design for three consecutive years. We can all speculate as to why the iPhone 7 looks almost exactly like the iPhone 6s, which looked almost exactly like the iPhone 6, but all we can say for certain is that Apple chose to veer from its typical strategy of refreshing the iPhone's design every other year. Well, that's not entirely true because there's one more thing we can say for certain: Apple fans are long overdue for a fresh new iPhone design. And this coming September, they're going to get it. Which brings us to yesterday's big iPhone 8 leak. We had seen the design in one form or another at least a few dozen times, but it all came together in Hemmerstoffer's video. Let's have another look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW1gx086ZxU Again, this isn't an actual iPhone 8. Instead, the creators took CAD drawings of the iPhone 8 that are believed to have leaked from one of the Foxconn factories responsible for building the iPhone 8. Using those drawings, they machined parts out of glass and metal. Here's a look at the parts that were used: https://twitter.com/OnLeaks/status/880328185182904320 Why are we taking another look at this video? After three years with the same iPhone design, it was important that Apple wow us with its new iPhone 8. Based on everything we had heard, it seemed like that would be the case. Of course, now that we've seen what appears to be a spitting image of Apple's iPhone 8 in the flesh, we can safely say that this new flagship phone is going to be fantastic. The glass and polished aluminum edges flow into each other, creating a continuous look that no other phone has achieved. This is further enhanced by the removal of the home button on the front. And of course, there's no space for a fingerprint scanner on the back, so it appears as though Apple has indeed managed to integrate its next-generation optical Touch ID sensor into the display itself. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 8 along with a new iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus in September. It's still unclear if the 8 will be released at the same time as its counterparts or if the 7s and 7s Plus will launch first, followed by the iPhone 8 a few weeks later. |
