Selfie tops twerk as Oxford's word of the year Posted: 19 Nov 2013 01:22 AM PST Selfie is the 2013 word of the year, Oxford Dictionaries announced Tuesday, edging out some stiff competition from twerk. Usage of the word has increased 17,000 percent over the past 12 months, said Oxford Dictionaries, which publishes the mammoth Oxford English Dictionary (OED), styled as the definitive record of the English language. Selfie is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website". In 2013 it evolved from a social media buzzword to mainstream shorthand for a self-portrait photo. |

Search for victims as Sardinia floods leave 18 dead Posted: 19 Nov 2013 11:19 AM PST OLBIA (Italy) (AFP) - Italian emergency workers searched house by house on the island of Sardinia on Tuesday after a Mediterranean cyclone triggered flash floods, leaving 18 people dead and forcing thousands to seek emergency shelter. "We are looking inside homes, inside basements, particularly in outlying areas," Gianfranco Galaffu, local director of the civil protection agency for the worst affected northern part of the island, told AFP. For now we are taking care of the most acute emergencies," he said, adding that personnel and equipment were being sent in from other parts of Sardinia and mainland Italy. Thousands were displaced by the flooding, said Environment Minister Andrea Orlando. |
