Big quake in Afghanistan and Pakistan kills over 200 Posted: 26 Oct 2015 11:29 AM PDT A major earthquake struck the remote Afghan northeast on Monday, killing more than 200 people in Afghanistan and nearby northern Pakistan, injuring hundreds and sending shock waves as far as New Delhi, officials said. The death toll could climb in coming days because communications were down in much of the rugged Hindu Kush mountain range where the quake was centered. In one of the worst incidents, at least 12 girls were killed in a stampede to flee their school building in Taloqan, just west of Badakhshan province where the tremor's epicenter was located.

A judge on Monday ordered that Adacia Chambers be held on $1 million bond on four counts of second-degree murder and granted a defense request that she be given a psychiatric examination. Speaking to reporters at Payne County Courthouse, Chambers' attorney, Tony Coleman, and her father, Floyd Chambers, said the 25-year-old woman had sought mental health treatment twice in recent years.

The proliferation of firearms is one of the factors behind a rise in homicide rates in many U.S. cities this year, according to senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago. Acknowledging the power of the gun lobby and the reluctance of Congress to enact stricter gun laws, the police chiefs told a news conference they were not anti-gun but wanted to keep weapons out of the hands of people with criminal backgrounds.

The shooting happened minutes after a white man matching his description fired several shots a few miles away at a law firm in a building that also has a military recruiting center, which was not a target, Bettendorf spokeswoman Lauran Haldeman said. Haldeman said that Bettendorf police were responding to a report of shots fired at a prosthesis and brace-making business when they saw the man holding a handgun in the parking lot.
