At a relatively brisk 17 hours, Qantas debuts non-stop flight between Australia and UK

Posted: 25 Mar 2018 08:48 PM PDT

At a relatively brisk 17 hours, Qantas debuts non-stop flight between Australia and UKFlying to the UK from Australia has always been an exceptionally long trip. Australian airline Qantas has made that trek less arduous with the debut of its non-stop Perth to London flight on Saturday — its travel time has been shaved down to a somewhat brisk 17 hours. SEE ALSO: You're more likely to get the flu from a sick flight attendant than a sick passenger: study It's the first time Europe and Australia have been connected with a direct commercial flight.  A momentous occasion on the flight deck of #QF9#QantasDreamliner pic.twitter.com/dRTh79ZxUb — Qantas (@Qantas) March 24, 2018 Previously, flights stopped in Singapore or Dubai before continuing on. Qantas said it is able to reduce the time of the 9,000 mile (14,498km) flight by eliminating stopovers and picking paths based on the best winds for efficiency and speed. Flight QF9 flew over the Indian Ocean, where it traversed India's southern tip, then passed Oman, Iran, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Belgium before landing at London's Heathrow Airport. "This is a truly historic flight that opens up a new era of travel. For the first time, Australia and Europe have a direct air link," Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement. "The original Kangaroo Route from Australia to London was named for the seven stops it made over four days back in 1947. Now we can do it in a single leap." Carrying 236 passengers, the fuel efficient Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Qantas uses for the route has a smaller capacity than the 484 seats it has on the Airbus A380, a comparable aircraft.   To boost passenger comfort, Qantas said it has designed a menu that includes "poke bowls as well as home style comfort food" which "helps the body cope better with jetlag."  Boeing has also cut the cabin air pressure from the equivalent of 8,000 feet to 6,000 feet, meaning inside the plane it's "closer to conditions on the ground." OK, but what is it actually like flying for that long? Reviews appeared to be mostly positive, with passenger Mark Beasley telling to Traveller that he found the economy seat "very comfortable" despite his 188 centimetre (6 foot 1) frame.  Expat Sarah Fry said the flight was "much better" than her usual route to London from Brisbane, which stopped over in Sydney then Dubai. Peter Robinson, a builder from the UK, told The Independent he found the food "ordinary," even if the flight was quicker than he expected. On Twitter, other passengers noted the issue-free flight, and the self-serve snack bar. #QF9 touchdown @londonheathrow direct from @PerthAirport after a great flight with no issues. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discharged from hospital

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:47 PM PDT

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discharged from hospital Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released from hospital on Tuesday after suffering from a high fever and a cough,  his office said. Netanyahu said on Twitter: "I am on my way home. Sure some rest and hot soup will put things right." An official statement from his office said hospital tests indicated the prime minister was suffering from a mild viral infection of his upper respiratory tract.  "The doctors recommended him to rest and undergo medical treatment," his office said in a statement, without giving details. An earlier statement said Netanyahu's personal physician believed the 68-year-old leader had not fully recovered from an illness two weeks ago and therefore decided he should undergo further tests in hospital. Netanyahu fell ill in mid-March and cancelled his public schedule for five consecutive days. "The prime minister did not complete the time required in order to recover from the illness he had two weeks ago and therefore the symptoms have gotten worse," the spokesman said in a text message. Netanyahu's illness has come at a stressful time for the four-times right-wing prime minister, who is under police investigation for corruption in three different cases. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing. On Monday Netanyahu, his wife and son were questioned by police as part of an investigation into one of the corruption cases in which the prime minister is a suspect. In the two other cases police have already recommended that Netanyahu be charged with bribery. The final decision about whether to prosecute rests with the Israeli attorney general. That decision could be months away. Profile | Benjamin Netanyahu So far, partners in Netanyahu's governing coalition have stood by him, saying they are awaiting the attorney general's next moves. Political analysts say such support may erode if the investigations against Netanyahu intensify. Surveys have shown that about half of Israelis believe the police over Netanyahu and think he should step down, while a third think he should remain in office. Support for Netanyahu's Likud party remains strong in opinion polls.

Kremlin warns Boris Johnson it has a 'surprise' for those who compare Russia to Nazi GermanyThe Kremlin has warned Boris Johnson that it has a "surprise" in store for those who have the "impudence" to compare Russia with Nazi Germany. In a veiled warning to the Foreign Secretary, Maria Zakharova, a spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry, claimed that the UK is using the Salisbury attack as part of a "black PR" campaign to turn the West against Russia. Describing Mr Johnson's comparisons between Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin as a "colossal provocation," Ms Zakharova told Russian reporters that there would be repercussions for Britain. "We have a surprise for all who have the impudence to compare, to draw parallels between Russia and the Third Reich," she added. " Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova attacked the Foreign Secretary over his comments It comes after Mr Johnson compared Russia's actions to those of Nazi Germany, telling MPs last week that it was "certainly right" to compare this summer's Fifa World Cup with the Berlin Games of 1936. The Foreign Secretary went further two days later, telling reporters during a trip to Lincoln that Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 shared similarities with the invasion of the Sudetenland prior to Second World War. Mr Johnson's comments were met with a withering response from the Kremlin, which accused him of being "poisoned with venom of hate, boorishness and unprofessionalism". Meanwhile, Theresa May's decision to blame Russia for ordering the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia has seen Western leaders rally behind Britain.
