Hurricane Hector heading towards Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcanoA major hurricane is cutting a path towards an active Hawaiian volcano where months of non-stop eruptions have already caused thousands to flee their homes. Scientists speculated that low-atmospheric pressure from Hurricane Hector could re-start major eruptions at the Kilauea Volcano, if it maintains its course over the southern edge of Hawaii's Big Island. Its current trajectory puts it on collision course with the volcano which is in the midst of a three-month-long eruption that has seen lava vents open under homes on its eastern flank while its summit crater collapses.

North Korea criticises US insistence on tough sanctions despite nuclear deal

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 04:50 AM PDT

North Korea criticises US insistence on tough sanctions despite nuclear dealNorth Korea on Saturday said the US was acting with "alarming" impatience on the issue of denuclearisation, after Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, stressed the need to maintain full sanctions pressure on Pyongyang. The contrasting comments at a security forum in Singapore came after a UN report showed Pyongyang was continuing with its nuclear and missile programmes and evading sanctions through ship-to-ship oil transfers. At historic talks with Donald Trump, the US President, in June, Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, signed up to a vague commitment to "denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" - a far cry from long-standing US demands for complete, verifiable and irreversible disarmament. While US officials have publicly been optimistic about the agreement, Pyongyang appears to have made little substantial progress and Washington has become concerned that some UN member states are easing sanctions. At the ASEAN Regional Forum, Ri Yong Ho, North Korea's Foreign Minister, criticised US impatience on denuclearisation. "What is alarming, however, is the insistent moves manifested within the US to go back to the old, far from its leader's intention," he said, according to a statement. Hidden trillions: What if North Korea's economy opened up? Since the June agreement, Pyongyang had taken "goodwill measures", including a halt on nuclear and missile tests and "dismantling a nuclear test ground", he said. "However, the United States, instead of responding to these measures, is raising its voice louder for maintaining the sanctions against the DPRK," he said, using the initials of the North's official name. "As long as the US does not show in practice its strong will to remove our concerns, there will be no case whereby we will move forward first unilaterally," Mr Ri added. Earlier at the same forum, Mr Pompeo said he was emphasizing "the importance of maintaining diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea" but also said that he was "optimistic" about the prospects for progress when it came to North Korean denuclearisation. At Saturday's meeting, the US delegation also delivered a letter from Mr Trump intended for Mr Kim, by passing it to Mr Ri, said the State Department. On sanctions, Mr Pompeo singled out Russia after reports suggested Moscow breached sanctions by granting work permits to North Korean workers. During meetings with other foreign ministers in Singapore, Mr Pompeo said he had called specifically for sanctions to be enforced through halting ship-to-ship oil transfers. Cutting off oil and fuel to the North would require enforcement primarily by China, which supplies most of North Korea's energy needs, but also by Russia, which delivers some oil to Pyongyang.

US progress in reuniting migrant families 'disappointing', says judge

US progress in reuniting migrant families 'disappointing', says judgeThe federal judge overseeing the reunification of more than 2,500 migrant families separated by Donald Trump's administration said the government's efforts were "disappointing" – and it was its responsibility to unite them. Hundreds of families remain separated a week after the court's reunification deadline because the parents are no longer in the US or have been deemed ineligible for reunification by the government. "The reality is that for every parent who is not located there will be a permanently orphaned child and that is 100% the responsibility of the administration," said the US district judge Dana Sabraw in his San Diego court on Friday.

Thousands more evacuated from California's largest wildfire(Reuters) - Thousands more mountain residents were evacuated from the path of California's biggest wildfire on Friday as fatigued firefighters battled gusting winds driving one of the state's worst fire seasons in a decade. The Mendocino Complex Fire grew to 157,450 acres (63,700 hectares) late Friday, about half the size of Los Angeles, forcing nearly 16,000 homeowners to flee a blaze that has destroyed 88 structures about 93 miles (150 km) north of San Francisco, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). Its size overtook the deadly Carr Fire, about 100 miles (160 km) to the northeast, which is among 17 major blazes burning in tinder-dry forests and woodland peppered with dead trees from the state's 2011-2017 drought.

Aluminum tariffs tap out Canada craft brewers

Aluminum tariffs tap out Canada craft brewersCanadian craft brewers are facing a sudden aluminum can shortage and are blaming the supply disruptions on aluminum tariffs, making these small businesses among the first casualties of the Canada-US trade spat. "It's a terrible time for brewers," Luke Harford, president of industry association Beer Canada, told AFP, noting that Canadian tax hikes on beer and new competition from the soon-to-be-legal recreational-use cannabis in October will compound brewers' tariff woes. Canada is the world's third largest aluminum producer, but still imports more than 2 billion cans annually, mostly from the United States, according to the government statistical agency.

Israel's 'loyal' Druze Arabs push for changes after Jewish state lawBy Ori Lewis JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's new "nation-state" law has provoked anger among members of its most integrated minority, the Druze, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seek corrective legislation. In a further effort to calm tensions, Netanyahu convened a meeting with Druze community leaders in Tel Aviv late on Thursday but it was cut short because one of the participants, a retired senior military officer, had harshly criticized the legislation, Israeli media reported.

Nasa names astronauts to fly on first private US spaceships

Nasa names astronauts to fly on first private US spaceshipsNASA named the first nine astronauts who will fly to space on Boeing and SpaceX vehicles in 2019 on Friday - a mix of novices and veterans who are tasked with restoring America's ability to send humans into orbit. These pioneering flights to the International Space Station aboard commercially built crew capsules will be the first leaving US soil to put people into orbit since the iconic space shuttle program ended in 2011. For the past seven years, NASA astronauts have hitched rides to the orbiting outpost on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft - at a cost of some $80 million a seat. "This is a big deal for our country and we want America to know that we are back, that we are flying American astronauts on American rockets from American soil," NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said as he unveiled the crew members in Houston, Texas. An unmanned Boeing flight test is scheduled for later this year, with the first crew on board in mid-2019, NASA said. Those named for the crew test flights for Boeing's Starliner include NASA shuttle veterans Eric Boe and Christopher Ferguson, along with Nicole Aunapu Mann, a naval aviator who was named a NASA astronaut in 2013 and will be making her first flight to space. "It is going to be a proud moment for America," Mann said. NASA astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann Credit: Barcroft/UPI US President Donald Trumpalso praised the news while giving himself a pat on the back: "NASA, which is making a BIG comeback under the Trump Administration, has just named 9 astronauts for Boeing and Spacex space flights," he tweeted. "We have the greatest facilities in the world and we are now letting the private sector pay to use them," Trump said. "Exciting things happening." "Space Force!" he added, referencing a sixth branch of the military he has called for that would focus on defending US interests. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 3, 2018 SpaceX's first crew tests will be manned by shuttle veterans Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley. After that, the companies move on to actual missions. NASA "has contracted six missions, with as many as four astronauts per mission, for each company," the agency said. On board Starliner's first mission will be NASA veteran Sunita Williams, a retired Navy captain and experienced space shuttle astronaut, and Josh Cassada, a Navy pilot making his first flight to space. SpaceX's first crew will include naval aviator Victor Glover, also a novice to spaceflight, and shuttle veteran Michael Hopkins. Space exploration | Recent exciting discoveries More astronauts will be announced to join the crews at a later date, NASA said. NASA awarded contracts to Boeing and SpaceX in 2014 as part of its commercial crew program, aimed at helping private industry build spaceships to reach low-Earth orbit. "The goal is to have safe, reliable and cost-effective access to and from the International Space Station and foster commercial access to other potential low-Earth orbit destinations," NASA said. The US space agency, meanwhile, is working on building rockets and spacecraft that could allow humans to return to the Moon in the coming decade. Both Boeing and SpaceX are slightly behind schedule when it comes to their crew vehicles. The first manned flights were initially supposed to take place in 2018.
