Trump delays State of the Union Address until shutdown ends

Trump delays State of the Union Address until shutdown endsEarlier in the day, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives floated the idea of ending the partial government shutdown by giving Trump most or all of the money he seeks for security along the Mexican border but for items other than the wall he wants. As a shutdown that has left 800,000 federal workers without pay hit its 33rd day, Pelosi effectively disinvited Trump from delivering the annual State of the Union address in the House chamber until the government is fully opened. "I look forward to giving a "great" State of the Union Address in the near future!" Other leaders in the Democratic-controlled House said they were drafting a funding offer they will likely make to Trump in a letter.

Heinz made Ketchup Caviar so Valentine's Day dates can dine like fancy trash

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 12:23 PM PST

Heinz made Ketchup Caviar so Valentine's Day dates can dine like fancy trashNothing says romance like small round capsules filled with tomato goo. That's the new Heinz motto, probably. Why? Well, for starters the condiment company is celebrating Valentine's Day with a fancy new product called Ketchup Caviar, which is, essentially, exactly what it sounds like. Think regular caviar, then remove the delicacy of fish eggs, replace it with balls filled with ketchup, and you have Ketchup Caviar. You OK? Alright, good. > America's favorite ketchup presents America's favorite caviar. Reply with #HeinzKetchupCaviar and #Sweeps for the chance to get your hands on one of 150 jars this Valen-HEINZ day. No purchase necessary. Rules linked in bio. pic.twitter.com/aa8NNebVk1 > > -- Heinz Ketchup (@HeinzKetchup_US) January 24, 2019 On Thursday, the official Heinz Ketchup Twitter account shared a video of the "limited edition delicacy for true ketchup lovers," and boy is it something. One colleague of mine described them as "ketchup beans," while another dubbed them "ketchup bubbles." (Both correct, in my opinion.) And Mashable's Executive Editor, the mom of a young child who would probably have a ~ball~ with the ketchup balls, simply referred to the "ketchup in tiny, exploding ball form" as her "nightmare." While the "caviar" is meant to be luxurious, it doesn't seem to be especially practical. I mean, how are you supposed to eat fries with ketchup? Use two fries as chopsticks and pick up a caviar bit? Seems bad. SEE ALSO: Costco is now selling a 27-pound bucket of macaroni and cheese The lil ketchup pearls were created with the goal of helping ketchup-loving couples have an "exquisite Valentine's Day experience," according to the video. But as it turns out the caviar isn't actually available for purchase. Instead, 150 Heinz Ketchup Caviar jars will be sent free of charge to a select group of Twitter users. If you're interesting in winning one, all you have to do is respond to a tweet from @HeinzKetchup_US with your thoughts about the latest concoction using the hashtags #HeinzKetchupCaviar and #sweeps. The opportunity to win is only available from Jan. 24 to Jan. 28, though. So if you're in the mood to eat some fancy ketchup you'd better send out your tweet. Be sure to check out Heinz's full list of rules and promotional guidelines here, and, uh, best of luck impressing all your Valentine's day dinner dates. ## WATCH: What happens to your body when you eat spicy food?

Russia takes wraps off new missile to try to save U.S. nuclear pactWashington has threatened to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), alleging that the new Russian missile, the Novator 9M729 (called SSC-8 by NATO), violates the pact, which bans either side from stationing short and intermediate-range, land-based missiles in Europe. Russia denies that. It says the missile's range puts it outside the treaty and has accused the United States of inventing a false pretext to exit a treaty it wants to leave anyway so as to develop new missiles.

Google pushed to curb employee protests while claiming to support walkouts, documents show

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 10:35 AM PST

Google pushed to curb employee protests while claiming to support walkouts, documents showGoogle is under fire from its own employees after it asked the US government to change rules which allow staff to plan activism on their work email accounts.  The Silicon Valley tech giant urged the National Labor Relations Board, the US agency which enforces labour laws, to roll back rules which stop companies punishing activist employees who form unions or circulate petitions on workplace communication systems, documents obtained by Bloomberg show. Last November thousands of Google employees walked out of their offices over allegations that the company had made substantial payouts to senior figures accused of sexually harassing staff. In a memo on October 30, Sundar Pichai, Google's chief executive, told employees he was "deeply sorry" for the company's "past actions" and that workers who chose to walk out would "have the support [they] need". The filing by Google's lawyers urging the NLRB to change the rules was made three weeks later in an unrelated court case case, in which the NLRB had accused the company of infringing on workers' rights. A spokeswoman for Google said the filing was not part of any concerted lobbying campaign to change the rules, and that it was simply one of the possible legal defences in response to a charge the company considers "without merit".  The NLRB has accused Google of breaking workplace laws including by making threats against employees and warning an employee about comments they had made on email and the company forum G+.  The disciplined employee has not been named, but his lawyer told Bloomberg that his client had been punished for failing to conform to the company's "very, very left-wing office culture".  Activists involved in the November walk-out accused the company of "not operating in good faith" and said the move showed that statements made by Mr Pichai in support of the walkout were hollow. 20 years of Google They also warned that the change would limit their own abilities to organise further activism. The walkout organisers said: "Sundar assured us that he and Google's leadership supported the walkout. But the company's requests to the National Labor Relations Board tell a different story, showing that Google would rather pay lawyers to change national labor law than do what's right." A Google spokeswoman said: "Google is one of the most open workplaces in the world. Employees have multiple internal forums to express their views, raise concerns and connect, including thousands of internal communities and tens of thousands of email groups.  "We're not lobbying for changes to any rules. This was a legal defense that we included as one of many possible defenses in the response to a charge. This case is without merit and we are defending the claim vigorously."

Kamala Harris presidential campaign attracts more donors in day one than Bernie Sanders’ first 24 hours in 2016

Kamala Harris presidential campaign attracts more donors in day one than Bernie Sanders' first 24 hours in 2016California Senator Kamala Harris has raised over $1.5m with an average donation of $37 per donation during the first 24 hours of her presidential campaign, aides to her campaign say. Ms Harris received the support from over 38,000 donors, topping the 35,000 people who pitched in to prop up Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders when he began is presidential bid in 2016 against Hillary Clinton — but still roughly matching his first day total of $1.5m. "These numbers reveal a campaign powered by the people — an energetic, nationwide movement eager to elect Senator Harris and support her vision of an America that actually works for the people", Mike Nellis, the campaign's digital aide, said.

NASA swaps out astronauts for first manned flight on Boeing’s new ship

Posted: 23 Jan 2019 02:09 PM PST

NASA swaps out astronauts for first manned flight on Boeing's new shipLast year was a huge year for private spaceflight, with a steady stream of very successful launches and huge progress being made on more ambitious ventures. It's already looking like 2019 is going to be an even bigger test for SpaceX, as well as competitor Boeing. Both groups are expected to soon begin their new manned spacecraft systems that will eventually serve NASA's needs, but first NASA has to make sure it has its crews ready. In a new announcement, NASA reveals that it is swapping out one of the astronauts expected to participate in the very first manned flight of the Boeing Starliner ship, which will ferry travelers to and from the International Space Station. The swap will see astronaut Eric Boe removed from the planned crew roster and replaced by Mike Fincke. NASA doesn't offer much in the way of details surrounding the decision to shuffle the astronauts other than to say that Boe "is unable to fly due to medical reasons." Boe was originally announced as a member of the crew in August 2018. "Fincke will begin training immediately alongside NASA's Nicole Mannand Boeing's Chris Ferguson, who were both assigned to the mission in August 2018," NASA says in a new blog post. "The Starliner's Crew Flight Test will be the first time that the new spacecraft, which is being developed and built by Boeing as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, is launched into space with humans on board." It'll be a history-making flight in that Boeing is expected to be the first commercial partner to have its manned spacecraft ready to take passengers. Lots of things could change that, however, as both Boeing and SpaceX will need to prove to NASA that their ships are capable of safely transporting astronauts. Before either SpaceX's Crew Dragon or Boeing's Starliner are allowed to carry a crew, both companies will showcase the capabilities of their hardware with unmanned test flights which will be closely monitored by NASA.

Apple cuts hundreds of employees from secretive self-driving car project

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 03:59 AM PST

Apple cuts hundreds of employees from secretive self-driving car projectApple has cut more than 200 employees from its self-driving car team, known internally as 'Project Titan'. Project Titan has been a significant but closely guarded project at the iPhone creator for nearly five years. At its height, it was said that over 5,000 employees were either working on or aware of the self-driving car projects reportedly lead by Ford and Apple veteran Bob Mansfield since 2014. The latest dismissals come as the company restructures its autonomous technology projects. Apple acknowledged the cuts, initially reported by CNBC, but said that it still sees a 'huge opportunity' in the sector. "We have an incredibly talented team working on autonomous systems and associated technologies at Apple," said an Apple spokesman. "As the team focuses their work on several key areas for 2019, some groups are being moved to projects in other parts of the company, where they will support machine learning and other initiatives, across all of Apple."  "We continue to believe there is a huge opportunity with autonomous systems, that Apple has unique capabilities to contribute, and that this is the most ambitious machine learning project ever." Apple has reportedly been testing its 'Project Titan' vehicles in and around its campus in Cupertino, California. Credit:  Reuters It is unclear how many of the 200 employees have left Apple altogether or have been moved to other projects within the company. However, it is reported that the restructure was expected following the August 2018 appointment of former Tesla engineering vice president, Doug Field, to lead Project Titan alongside Mansfield. Apple has regularly said that its autonomous vehicle project was a significant focus for the company, with CEO Tim Cook saying it was the 'mother of all AI projects' in 2017. While the actual tech behind Project Titan has remained a close secret, Apple had the third highest permit applications for self-driving vehicles in California behind General Motor's 'Cruise' and Waymo.  Apple has been reportedly testing its self-driving vehicles in and around its Cupertino headquarters, with the goal of an automated shuttle service running throughout its campus. In August 2018, it was confirmed by Californian authorities that an Apple test vehicle had been involved in a minor crash near its base after it was rear-ended by a human Nissan driver. Reports also have it that Apple has restructured Project Titan once before in 2016, scaling back the company's ambitions to build their own vehicle in order to focus on software and AI. Where this latest change leaves Project Titan remains to be seen while Apple continue to deal with the fallout from its shock profit warning earlier this month, cutting sales forecasts for the first time since 2002.
