Snake makes a sudden appearance on driver's sssssside window

Posted: 10 Jan 2018 06:20 PM PST

Snake makes a sudden appearance on driver's sssssside windowSnakes are relatively common in Australia, but perhaps less so coiled up on people's cars. A driver got quite the surprise when a venomous red-bellied black snake made an appearance on the side of his car on Wednesday. SEE ALSO: Nightmare alert: 5-foot snake found hiding in someone's toilet in Texas According to ABC News, driver Ted Ogier was driving back from the New South Wales town of Eden for work, when suddenly a snake slithered from under the bonnet to curl around the driver's side mirror. Oh, and it wanted in. "It was sort of tapping on the window a couple of times, because it obviously wanted to get in," Ogier told the news outlet.  The snake was estimated to be about 2.5 metres (8 feet) long, and Ogier got a co-worker to remove the reptile with a broom. It's likely the snake crawled in to the engine bay, seeking a bit of warmth. While red-bellied black snakes are highly venomous, they are a shy snake, preferring to flee and will only bite if you seriously try and annoy it, according to the Australian Museum. 'Breakthrough' breast cancer drug thwarted by chemical found in bread

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:00 AM PST

'Breakthrough' breast cancer drug thwarted by chemical found in breadA chemical found in bread and a range of other common foods can thwart treatment for breast cancer, scientists have warned. New research suggested the benefits of the "breakthrough" new drug palbociclib, which is given to women with oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, was effectively reversed by xenoestrogens. The compounds are present in products made from wheat, maize, barley and other staples. Scientists said women currently taking the drug should consider altering their diet. They also suggested that, as well as hindering the benefit of the palbociclib, xenoestrogens may accelerate the growth of oestrogen-fuelled cancers themselves. Manufactured by Pfizer, the medication was approved for use on the NHS in November for women with oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer - which accounts for about 70 per cent of cases - in whom the disease was advanced and unlikely to be cured. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence gave the green light after trials showed palbociclib could double the period progression-free survival in some patients. Palbociclib was described as the 'next best thing to a cure' Credit: PA Currently available to up to 8,000 women in the UK, it has been described as the "closest thing to a cure", although scientists have hinted the drug may one day be improved to form a replacement to chemotherapy for women with early-stage breast cancer. However, the new laboratory research by The Scripps Research Institute in California showed that even limited exposure to xenoestrogens largely reversed the impact of the medication when used in combination with letrozole. "It's intriguing that even a low, background-level exposure to these xenoestrogens was enough to impact the effect of the therapy to this degree," said Dr Benedikt Warth, lead author of the study, which is published in the journal Cell Chemical Biology. His colleague, Dr Gary Siuzdak, said: "Breast cancer patients taking palbociclib/letrozole should consider limiting their exposure to foods that contain xenoestrogens." The Scripps team warned they had only tested the effect of two types of xenoestrogens and that many more were to be found in the human diet. "There are probably a lot of clinically relevant discoveries yet to be made," said Dr Warth.

Myanmar army changes tack with Rohingya killings admission

Myanmar army changes tack with Rohingya killings admissionAfter months denying any wrongdoing, Myanmar has admitted its forces helped kill 10 Rohingya in custody in an apparent bid to blame a few rogue soldiers for what the global community alleges is part of an organised ethnic cleansing campaign. Accounts of mass murder, rape and torture from the 655,000 Rohingya who fled Myanmar's army to Bangladesh have horrified the world. Since the August crackdown the army vigorously denied any abuses, instead locking down access to Rakhine state and accusing critics -- including the UN -- of pro-Rohingya bias and spreading "fake news".

Girl plays 'Star Wars' Cantina theme with a pencil, is groundbreaking math geniusWhat you're about to watch is the work of a name you should remember: Dani Ochoa.  Dani, who characterizes herself as "a girl with too much time on her hands" is also, apparently, a goddamn math genius.  She figured out how to play the Mos Eiseley Cantina theme from "Star Wars."  With a pencil.  While writing. While writing a coherent and apparently working math equation.  And not just a working math equation. But a working math equation that produces, yes, the number of the speed of light. A sampling of crowdsourced math-checked, via the Reddit Video thread,  found this: Yeah, look, we work for a website, half this industry barely squeaked by Algebra 2—we don't know if the math actually checks out, but sure as hell sounds legit.   Anyway, bottom line, here: Dani Ochoa deserves a MacArthur Grant. With a little more time on her hands, she's gonna send us into the fifth dimension and find a new planet where we can live. There, phrases like "Steve Bannon" don't exist. All hail.  WATCH: Star Wars fans worldwide are attending lightsaber schools
