Philippine environment chief dumped as miners triumphPhilippine Environment Secretary Regina Lopez was sacked on Wednesday when lawmakers rejected her appointment, in a big victory for the mining industry which she had accused of corruption and abuse. Lopez sent shockwaves through the industry during her 10 months as environment chief, seeking to shut down roughly two-thirds of the nation's existing mines and banning any new open-pit operations. With the Philippines being the world's biggest supplier of nickel ore and a major source of copper, Lopez's campaign had impacted global prices.

Miraculously, no one was injured in this explosive plane crash caught on video

Miraculously, no one was injured in this explosive plane crash caught on video

What appeared to be a catastrophic, potentially deadly accident turned out to be far less serious than the footage would have you believe. Earlier this week, a driver by the name of Guanting Li (Simon Li on YouTube) captured a dash cam video of a small plane crashing and exploding near a busy intersection in Mukilteo, Washington, clipping power lines and hitting cars on its way down.

According to local news station KIRO 7, plane fuel and fire poured down on to unsuspecting motorists from the skies before the plane took out the traffic lights on Mukilteo Speedway, hit at least five cars and skidded to a halt on Harbour Pointe Boulevard. At that point, it erupted into flames:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXxdUMbQmMM

Incredibly, both the pilot and the single passenger in the Piper PA32 single-engine aircraft crawled out of the wreckage unscathed. In fact, no injuries have been reported from the crash at all.

The pilot told KIRO 7 that he started to lose power and couldn't restart the engine shortly after taking off. Seeing that Harbour Pointe Boulevard was clear of traffic, he turned the plane in that direction, trying to cause as little damage as possible. As quickly as the plane had taken off from nearby Paine Field, it was smoking, mangled mess on a busy thoroughfare a few miles away.

While there were no injuries, traffic was blocked in both directions until the wreckage could be cleared and 9,000 resident of Snohomish County lost power. Considering how enormously destructive this could have been, backed up traffic and temporary loss of power sound like small prices to pay.

On Saturday, the BISSELL Pet Foundation held an "Empty the Shelters" event for Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Harbor Springs, Michigan. All 2,500 of the shelter's animals were adopted, leaving behind just one little pup, Eastwood — until someone took action. SEE ALSO: Shameless dog farts incredibly loud next to his stunned owner Eastwood is a 70-pound Labrador retriever who with a deformity in his leg. Workers at the shelter estimated that he may need a $4,000 surgery down the road, which appears to have scared some potential owners off. All of the dogs from Saturday were adopted, except for poor Eastwood. The shelter's Communications and Marketing Director, Jessica Evans, felt terrible about it and decided to post Eastwood on Facebook: ""Poor Eastwood is so lonely now that all of his pals have been adopted!" Evans said. "This amazing boy has a few health issues that need to be addressed (which is why we think he was abandoned initially, poor guy!), but this boy is so sweet, we know it will be well worth it." Crying yet? No? Hold on. Evans' post quickly became viral and soon enough, the applications started pouring in. Evans reported that she ultimately received over 80 applications. On Monday, Eastwood will move into his new home in Detroit. "For everyone who was hoping to adopt Eastwood, please consider opening your heart and home to one of the many homeless dogs who enter our shelter system every year-there are so many in need of wonderful, forever homes!" Evans wrote on Facebook. We're so — sob sob, heave heave, *call mom* — happy for him. WATCH: This night light goes inside your toilet bowl because why not

Final vote on Brazil pension reform now expected after JuneBy Maria Carolina Marcello BRASILIA (Reuters) - President Michel Temer's proposal to reform Brazil's costly social security system easily cleared a congressional committee vote on Wednesday, setting up for what are expected to be two tough floor votes in the lower house this month. The committee voted 23-14 to approve the unpopular constitutional amendment, which would make Brazilians work longer and reduce some pension benefits to plug a widening budget deficit at the root of the country's worst recession ever. The government, however, is not sure it has secured the two-thirds vote needed in the full chamber to approve a bill that is seen as crucial to Temer's efforts to recover investor confidence and restore investment and growth.

"This was a nine-hour flight. Although definitely gluten free, the banana did not keep me full for very long. At the price I paid, you would expect something more than that." The banana was also served with a knife and fork, which is apparently how one eats a banana.  "As a coeliac, I always order gluten-free meal on my flights. Sometimes they are bland, sometimes they are actually much better than the ordinary meal service," he told the Standard. "On this flight, I was left literally speechless." So if you're gluten-free and flying All Nippon Airways, remember to pack your own meal. The best new Android feature might finally launch soon

The best new Android feature might finally launch soon

When Google demoed Android Nougat for the first time almost a year ago at Google I/O 2016, Instant Apps was one of the features that stood out, as a trick the iPhone didn't have at the time and still doesn't have now. But as hot as it may be, the feature wasn't ready for public consumption when Google released the final Nougat build last year. However, things might change soon, as Google is apparently getting ready to enable it on devices running Android 7 as well as phones and tablets running older Android versions.

Instant Apps will let users enjoy instant app experiences on their smartphones without actually downloading a particular app for. Assuming it works as described, the feature will solve a bunch of problems.

First of all, it'll help save storage on the phone, as you won't have to keep an app installed just because you might have to use it every now and then. Secondly, you won't have to buy an app to try it since developers will be able to offer a portion of an app to test for free. Finally, the Instant Apps features will work on most Android devices out there, not just Nougat-based ones, as it's built on Google Play Services.

Looking at the code in the latest version of Google Play Store, 9to5Google discovered that Google might be getting ready to roll out Instant Apps. The code reveals that users will be able to enable or disable the feature and choose which Google account to use with an app.

Here's Google's demo of Instant Apps:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oaaecd7NpI

9to5Google also mentions several new features in the Google Play Store 7.8 update, including a Google Play app discovery service, a pre-registration rewards features for apps, and a new security branding for Verify Apps — that's Play Protect.
